Dodgy phonecalls from O2? 0800 number

I had a phonecall from o2 (which I have had before-they have rung me and I've altered my package) on Wednesday seeing if they could make any improvements. I was happy with my package, but she seemed keen to get other household members onto o2. The lady said they were offering an iphone 3G (same as mine) for no cost, 100 thingys for data, 50 minutes and unlimited text for £13.50 a month (which is the same deal as I'm on now as I've had the phone for ages). I thought this sounded brill and said I'd talk to my husband and she was going to phone me back this morning. I hadn't heard back by lunchtime, so I rang o2. He laughed and said they don't have any offers that good! He advised that I changed my password in case it was dodgy, which I did.

The 0800 number has just rung me again and said she's from o2 Manchester. I explained what o2 had said and she says they only phone existing customers and give better deals. When I said I was surprised o2 hadn't just told me that, she said she was too.

Then she said that if I wanted to go ahead with the deal, they would give me £50 M+S vouchers and £20 Next vouchers. Just wanted me to give my card number and they would take £1.01 and then it would all be activated.

Sounds like a load of old tosh to me-I told her I was going to research it and she's ringing me back tomorrow.

I've had calls in the past from o2 though which have given me great offers and reductions in my bill. Is this real or not!?

of course it's rubbish. never, ever, ever give someone like that your card details over the phone!!!

I thought as much-I was taken in to begin with as I've had calls from O2 before which have really improved my monthly payments!

Do you know where I can find the cheapest deal on an iphone 3g?!

yeah i know what you mean. It might be worth contacting O2 and asking how they verify themselves?
You should always be able to ring them back and they may be able to give you a direct number so that you can get the same person... but if it is genuinely O2 calling with an offer then if you hang up and ring back straight away there is no reason why you couldn't still access that offer if you're entitled to it.
they would never ask for card details or any other info like that though.

as for getting the best deal, tbh you could do a lot worse than going through somewhere like phones4u

otherwise places like money supermarket I think may have a mobile phone sectionm?

or alternatively just trawling all the individual phone providers.

we often get good offers through on mobiles from virgin media as we have our phone and broadband with them, so might also be worth ringing your service provider if they also do phones

I've had calls from O2 before which have given me reductions in my call plan, but they've never asked for my card details. Why would they? If they're really O2, surely they already have it?

Google the phone and see if anyone's posted about it on whocallsme.com. I had a weird phone call the other day and they hung up when I answered, the number was on there with twenty pages of posts about which company it was and how to stop them calling.

Hmm, I will look at those site, thank you thisisyesterday.

I know what you mean, BertieBotts-they wouldn't need my card details, would they-unless they would because it's a new contract (for DH)? The whole making a payment of £1.01 was very odd, too!
