And I have no idea what I am doing! I've spent over 15 years on PCs.

How, for the love of god, do I close a window??

Although it probably isn't called a window on an Apple.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/11/2011 13:22

OK.... I found the red light to do that.

I feel like such a newb.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2011 22:19

I love my mac book air - what do you want to know? I'll look it up for you

RustyBear · 07/11/2011 22:44

I have found this site useful since I got my MacBookPro.
Cmd generally takes the place of Ctrl and you will often find Export taking the place of Save As in the latest OS (Lion) and in the latest version of some programs.

(good thing I checked that post before sending, as iPad had changed Cmd to Camden, which could have been a little confusing....)

Kellamity · 07/11/2011 22:49

Just realised I haven't got a Mac Book Air at all it's a Mac Book Pro - still happy to help though Blush

SoupDragon · 07/11/2011 22:54

Oh, i used to love Camden Lock...

At the moment, I just have a very expensive web browsing machine :o

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/11/2011 22:55

its very pretty though.

Now, what are the Must Have apps?

I will, at some point, download dull stuff like Pages.

What is the best equivalent to MS Publisher?

i don't think I need games as I have my iPad for that, although I am rather disappointed it only came with chess.

BadgersPaws · 08/11/2011 09:42

"What is the best equivalent to MS Publisher?"

You get TextEdit with the machine, it's in the Applications folder.

OpenOffice is a pretty decent complete Office package and, best of all, is free so you can give it a go first:www.openoffice.org/

If you open the Mac App Store (not the iTunes App Store, this sells Mac Applications) you can buy Pages for about £25. I'm a big fan of Pages, it's nice and easy to use yet also pretty powerful.

You can buy MS Office if you really want to.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2011 09:48

Thanks.

I only say MS Publisher because thats the kind of thing I do PTA posters and stuff in. The ability to easily place text boxes, graphics and twirly whirly stuff is what i need :). I also used to do entire NCT newsletters in it.

The only reason I've not downloaded Pages is that it seems to be 2009 and I wondered if a new one may be on the horizon. I don't need it yet so I've held off for now.

Nothing is urgent as I still have the desktop PC that has all this stuff on it and it not going anywhere. I've also got Pages on my iPad.

"The ability to easily place text boxes, graphics and twirly whirly stuff is what i need . I also used to do entire NCT newsletters in it."

Pages should be pretty good at that, I've used it do do some fairly graphically heavy hand outs for things and it has templates for newsletters.

"The only reason I've not downloaded Pages is that it seems to be 2009 and I wondered if a new one may be on the horizon."

There have been several versions since then...

Pages isn't sold as a part of iWork any more, and the last version of iWork was iWork 09 so perhaps that's what you've seen. You can now buy Pages as a separate product directly from the App Store and it will neatly download and install itself onto your Mac.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2011 10:30

The only one I've found is Pages 09 and its £13.99 Its the only one I've come up with both from searching for Pages and looking at the "app starter kit" list.

"The only one I've found is Pages 09 and its £13.99"

You're quite right....

It does still call itself Page '09. However the actual version number is 4.1 and it was released in July this year so that is the latest version. I'm not aware of there being another version in the pipeline but Apple are more than a bit secretive...

SoupDragon · 08/11/2011 10:53

LOL... yes they are aren't they? :o

I do love the way you can just buy software at an App store. SO much simpler and you can just pick stuff up as you go. I don't need to plan in advance what I need as I can just find it, buy it and have it in minutes.

I had noticed it was 4.1 but, wasn't sure if that was major update or minor bug fixes and fluffing.

I now have a train maze game though, which I'm sure will be terribly useful and am very tempted by iProcrastinate planner simply because it has such a fabulous name!

Thank you.

I got Chronories the other day - if you like to keep a diary, it records all the websites you visit, the programs you use, people you contact, the weather & lots of other stuff, so if you only have time to update your diary at weekends, like me, it helps you remember what you did! But as I only got it on Sunday, I haven't used it much yet. What would be really nice would be if I could somehow sync it with my ipad/iphone via icloud, as so much of my stuff is done on those....

SoupDragon · 15/11/2011 14:03

[waves]

Me again.

Todays dumb question... When there is a spelling mistake, the text is nicel underlined in red. However, I don't know how to correct it other than by typing it properly. On the PC, you right clicked and picked the right word, on the ipad/iphone you touch it and pick the right word. On a MacBook Air you...? Confused

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 15/11/2011 14:19

"On the PC, you right clicked and picked the right word, on the ipad/iphone you touch it and pick the right word. On a MacBook Air you...?"

You right click.

You can do this by holding down CTRL and clicking.

Or on Mac laptops you can go into the Trackpad Preferences and if you look around there should be a way of setting various other ways of doing a right click. This might be a way of setting a click in the bottom right of the pad to be a right click or doing it with two fingers, I think it varies according to exactly what Mac laptop you have. So have a look at what you find and have a play with it.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2011 17:08

I have been right clicking in vain so clearly its not set up like that yet :o I did mange to change the settings so I could tap the pad rather than the inconveniently placed hidden button at the bottom but didn't investigate any other options.

Thanks. I am sure there will be more dumb questions.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 15/11/2011 17:11

Apparently I set it to be "tap with two fingers" [rolls eyes]

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 15/11/2011 17:13

So it's all OK?

SoupDragon · 15/11/2011 17:48

so far.

There will be a billion and one things in the future though. :o I know because I am still dealing with PC questions from my parents and they've had a computer for years now.
