What kind of Internet have you got? My bt broadband has been a bit slow for a couple of days

HarrietJones · 26/10/2011 21:17

Post office broadband.

is your wireless connection secure? if not could someone else be using it and slamming your bandwidth?

HarrietJones · 26/10/2011 21:23

Secure. Plus the signal doesn't seem to go out of the house anyway as I can't get a signal on the doorstep! or most of the house

If you've got a network cable plug into your router/modem with it. That will test if the speed problems are down to the WIFI bit of your connection or your actual broadband connection.

Also, if you've not already, try turning the modem/router on and off again.

HarrietJones · 26/10/2011 21:37

Can't get the cable at the moment as it's in the loft. Done the on/off thing a few times!

The Internet man suggested that it's because my phone is cordless & should plug it in away from the router but I've only got one phone socket

"The Internet man suggested that it's because my phone is cordless & should plug it in away from the router but I've only got one phone socket"

If by that you mean you've got one phone socket and into that are plugged a cordless phone and a modem/router then the "internet man" is talking nonsense. That's the set up I've got and it's fine.

Do try the cable, it knocks WIFI off the list of things that could be doing wrong.

HarrietJones · 26/10/2011 22:02

I felt it didn't make sense as it's been fine until this weekend

I've got exactly the same problem ever since me 'D' H decided to swap our (working perfectly) BT package for a Talk Talk one so he could save the price of a pint money.
I will try with a cable and report back.

The Internet man isn't entirely talking rubbish, cordless phones can sometimes interfere with wireless signal. However the better solution to that is to change the channel the wireless router is broadcasting on (your wireless router manual will tell you how), not moving it away, because as you've already noted that's often impractical.

You need to get back on to your provider and get them to run diagnostics on the line. Are they seeing a lot of disconnections? If so they should be able to tell you what, if anything, you need to change in your setup or if they need to fix something.

Do try the cable, it'll let you see if the connection is the problem or if the problem is with the wireless part of your setup. It could also be that your router is on the way out - how old is it? Do you have, or could you borrow, another to try?

Who is the Internet man? The tech support guy from the Postoffice or some third party you asked to take a look?

First thing to do is what Badgers says and get the cable to try and rule out Wifi. There's no point pestering your ISP if the problem is wireless and not really the Internet at all.

If using the wired cable it's still slow then get on the phone to tech support who should be able to tell you what speed your router is connected to the Internet at and whether or not you have a line issue.

Do you have an Android phone? If so you can try to download an app called Wifi Analyzer which will show you all wireless networks in range and give you a good idea if you have interference or not from others.

Another thing to ask if you or a neighbour has bought a new cordless phone, video sender, baby monitor etc. A lot of other devices use the same frequency as wireless and this can sometimes affect performance.

HarrietJones · 26/10/2011 23:52

No neighbours.

Y the tech support guy did diagnostics which said it was fine ( and much faster than he expected)

Im using an iPhone if there's an app for that?
