My brother has given me an iPad!!!!!!

I am trying ti sync it, but iTunes on my pc says to insert a new sim(??) and then it will continue.

What new SIM?? Do I take it out of my phone? Why?!

Just got mine too. Ran into problems when I tried to sync it, couldn't get FaceTime to work, in the end dh went to buy a new sim and sorted it all out, all working.

I know this isn't very helpful! I'll ask dh what exactly he did.

So it requires a completely new SIM. That's a bit annoying.

It's very beautiful, though, isn't it? Grin I am stroking it!

Oh, and does the SIM have to be with the same provider, or do you incur further charges from yet another one? I'd prefer everything to go through the one account, which is paid automatically. Would I need a 'clone' of my phone sim for that?

At the moment the iPad is using my normal wi-fi bb, but then, I'm at home and it can!

Aha!!!! It didn't sync and it didn't sync and then suddenly it did!

I've decided I don't need a sim for my iPad; I'm pretty sure it'll be OK without - looks like you only need it for 3G, and it'll do WiFi just like my phone does, which is fine. (I think so, anyway).

Now I can sit back and glory in its beauty. Just for a while.Grin

Have a word with your internet provider. You can "tether" your iPad and phone - connect them wirelessly - and use your phone's internet connection. Do you have an iPhone?

But ask your provider first cause some of them charge extra for this.

What a lovely brother you have.

ClaireDeLoon · 20/05/2011 10:47

I got one last week - you have a very very generous brother!

I didn't know about the tethering to my iPhone so I just want to the o2 shop and got a new SIM and set it up for £10 a month for 1GB of 3G data.

NetworkGuy · 22/05/2011 10:41

£10 a month for 1GB of 3G data

Gulp. The 3 network charges me 8 quid for 15 GB of data (for laptop dongle, but feel sure they might do a better deal than 10 quid for 1 GB of data for iPads).

Sorry, but felt worth pointing out for anyone else considering SIM for iPad...

Jux · 22/05/2011 23:27

ClairedeLoon, he is isn't he? Though I have now found that this is an inferior iPad as it doesn't have a camera. I shall have to have stern words with him about that Grin

NetworkGuy where are you and do you get good coverage? I agree it's a rip-off if you pay that but as it is PAYG I can chop and change. Will look into 3 charges

NetworkGuy · 24/05/2011 13:41

I'm in North Wales, in a small village around 10 miles south of Chester, on the outskirts of Wrexham. Anyway, coverage is fairly good, but that's probably a result of not just an A-road a mile or so away, but the fact it goes around a small hill... so they have one north of the hill, one south of the hill and one over to the west (near me) sited near a cemetery on top of another hill, to cover where the road goes west around the first hill [between the first pair of masts]. The first two were numbered LL0001 and LL0002 and the last one LL0078, so I assume they added it some time later when they found some gaps in coverage.

I checked on the Ofcom web site and found there are 3 cell masts for Three (because of that hill). There is one mast for T-Mobile, 1 for Vodafone and 1 for O2, and a few for Orange. You can check which masts are near you at Ofcom's SiteFinder and for higher speed internet access look for 'UMTS' or '2100 MHz' (frequency).

Hope that helps with finding which services are available where you are - you should also get coverage information for your postcode (and places you expect to go with your iPad) from the different network web sites.

Yes, using PAYG does mean you can chop and change but once you've found a service you like, you will likely find it cheaper to go for a contract. (However, the Three 'One Plan' might be worth asking about in a Three shop, since they seem to still be offering internet access without stingy limits.)

Using the PAYG service, you may find your usage is actually quite low - I know there have been threads where people indicate they have used only 500 MB in a month. I was using my (second hand) Nokia N80 the other day and some pages I looked at were 1 MB alone. I downloaded a few items and those ran to 5 or 10 MB each, but all the time I was using home wi-fi connection (fortunately) so was not worried or counting the pennies (or pounds).
