Can you download YouTube clips to an iPad?

Ds2, who is autistic, loves YouTube with a passion. We've loaded a number of fantastic educational apps onto his iPad, which he will do if we reward him with a YouTube clip after each one. This works fine at home, because we just switch to YouTube and the Favourites menu, but won't work at school because YouTube is firewalled (or is it filtered? Banned anyway). I was thinking that if I could download some of his favourite clips, it would be a way around the problem. I've googled and it seems to be possible but I can't understand the explanations. Can anyone on here explain it to me very sloooowly and carefully?
TIA

I think it is tricky. My DH who is v computer literate looked at doing it but couldn't (or maybe couldn't be bothered, he only spent 15 mins on it).

If anyone knows, I'm interested.

Yes you can. I've done it with my ipad mainly because I don't want to be constantly downloading the same data and when I'm out & about, it's not possible to watch YouTube with any certainty.

What you need to do is Jailbreak your ipad. It's not as bad as it sounds. Basically its unlocking it so you can install apps other than what Apple approve of.

There are plenty of guides out there and you are best off searching on Google/Youtube for instructions on how to do it. It will also depend upon what version of IOS you have. Definitely go for an untethered version of jailbreak.

Once you've done it, you need to install a program called Cydia (which is usually done automatically during jailbreak) then using Cydia, install MXTube. And that's the baby which will allow you to download Youtube videos.

Although Jailbreaking is perfectly legal, you can expect Apple updates to break it and thus if you upgrade to a later version, you will have to wait for the hackers to hack the new version again. As long as you remember not to upgrade, you'll be fine. I'm still on 4.01 & 4.2 on my iphone/ipad respectively because there's nothing in the new versions which make me want to jailbreak again.

Hope that helps

No, don't Jailbreak the iPad, if you're geeky and fancy a challenge then it can be "fun" but I wouldn't recommend it to most people.

Given what you want to do there are easier ways to accomplish this without out doing something that means you have to stop doing the normal Apple Updates.

There are programs out there that will download video from YouTube to your computer, you can then load that into iTunes and from iTunes get it onto your iPad.

If you come back with some more information about what computer and Operating System you use (Windows? Mac? Which version?) then someone should be able to recommend some software for you.

As an example here's a piece of Windows Software that will do the trick:

It's not free though... But there's bound to be something that is once people know what to look for.

I would rather not jailbreak as it sounds far too complicated! Badgers - we have an Apple Mac and a PC - uses Windows (Vista). The iPad is synched to the PC. Could I use the software you linked to?

do you pick up your emails on the ipad? on you tube, if you click on the box that says 'share' below the clip, there is an option to email it, you could just email it to yourself. not sure if it would work, but maybe worth trying.

sphil · 09/05/2011 11:07

I don't really want school going into my email account every time they want to access a YouTube clip. Not that I've got anything to hide, but even so...Grin

You could set up an email account that is only used for youtube clips.

BadgersPaws · 09/05/2011 11:42

"if you click on the box that says 'share' below the clip, there is an option to email it"

That won't actually email the clip, it will email a link to the clip, you'll still need web access to view it.

sphil · 09/05/2011 12:30

Thanks Badgers. It's the web access that's the problem.

Can you download them on your PC then put them in your iTunes library then sync them to the iPad so they are stored in your videos?

BadgersPaws · 09/05/2011 12:50

"Can you download them on your PC then put them in your iTunes library then sync them to the iPad so they are stored in your videos?"

Yes that's probably the best solution to this problem.

As said above you'll need software to do this and what software you need depends on what computer is being used.

"Thanks Badgers. It's the web access that's the problem."

Yes, so the email link won't help you out. Confirm what computer you're using and software can be found to do the YouTube to iTunes conversion.

we have a PC which uses Windows Vista ( I think? )

Is the iPad a 3G version? - because if so, you can turn off the wifi and connect to youTube using 3G at school, which should bypass the filter.

Try downloading this: download.cnet.com/YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10647340.html

It will let you download Youtube videos and save it in a variety of formats, I'm sure there's something there that Itunes can cope with (although I don't use Itunes myself so I can't check it). You shiould then be able to sync it to the iPad.
