Reference manager

Has anyone ever used a reference manager programme? Which ones are good?

Dh is on his way home with a manuscript where all the references have to be changed to numbers and then listed at the back in the order they are shown in the paper. It's got about 150 references though and I think he should wait and try a reference manager.

Would be worth it surely? I can see him sitting until 3am again fiddling with this manuscript.

I would recommend Zotero which is free. Its an online data base so you can access your references from any computer plus you don't have to worry about backup as its all on a server. Only drawback is that it only works with the Mozilla Firefox internet browser so if you don't have it that needs to be installed first. Just go to Zotero.com to learn more. I'm not working for them by the way, I'm a student and researcher at a university and use this rather than EndNote or Reference Manager which are paid for options. Good luck!

I didn't answer your question about whether it would be worth it - but I would think it would be. If he knows the references already he can add these to his data base pretty quickly and then incert them in the text where relevant. The bibliography is either added automatically at the end of the document or he can incert it himself.

Thanks snupperline, he's also a researcher! I'll suggest he tries Zotero when he gets in otherwise he has one of the paid for options at work - he just hasn't bothered looking into how it works yet, always something else more important to do!
