If I use my mobile as a modem is it the same as directly browsing the internet on it?

I'm sure I could have asked that in a simpler way!

So, I get free access to the internet on my mobile phone contract. I've just bought an ipad and connected it to the internet, via bluetooth, using my mobile as a modem (or do I mean router?).

For billing purposes, I'm wondering whether this would result in the same amount of MBs used or whether to expect a bill for the excess.

It depends.... Your network provider would call this "tethering" and most will charge you for it. I've been told 3 don't bother charging but Vodafone certainly do.

If in doubt, call them up & ask. Otherwise you could be in for a shock.

Thanks. I thought it was too good to be true!! I'll phone them tomorrow to find out.

What did they say? I haven't looked into it but, using Vodafone, I assumed you'd be charged for the 3G usage via the mobile?

The man on the phone didn't seem too sure but said I definitely haven't been charged for anything over the last couple of weeks so it would appear that it's using my inclusive data allowance.

However, I got a new phone yesterday which won't link to my ipad at all so I'm going to have to spend some time figuring out if it's possible with this new phone!
