Thanks to your help on the other thread, I've finally narrowed my choice to two laptops and am about to hit 'buy' but can't decide between them. They're both Dell Inspirations, both 15.6" and both have 4GB of whatsit RAM.

Okay, here's the difference. One has 320GB and has an Intel Core processor. It's £358 direct from Dell.
The other has 500GB and has a AMD AthlonII processor. It's £399 from Tesco. £40 more, but I would get 800 Clubcard points.

Here's the catch - I've no idea whether it's better to have 500GB on a processor I've never heard of, or 320GB with an Intel whatsit.

Which would you go for? Please try hard not to say 'I wouldn't go for Dell' as it's taken me a long time to get to this point Grin

I'm not network guy, but maybe he'll be along soon.

You've obviously already told him more detail than you've posted here, and it depends on what you want the machine to do. Aside from trying hard not to tell you what you don't want to hear.....the processors are much of a muchness. A few differences, but not enough to stress over if you are looking for a home pc.

My advice FWIW, buy the one you can best afford.

My DH is a software developer and all round computer geek and he says AMD are way better than Intel; get the fastest processor you can. He wants to know who makes the non-Dell one?
I say 800 clubcard points... sweeeeeet :)

Oh, d'oh! I've just read your post properly.
DH says the Tesco one.

culturemulcher - Can you give a bit more info about the 2 processors, or links to the laptops? You've basically told us the processor make, and that they're both dual core processors (you just missed the word "dual" from the intel description) but there's no info about the speed of either one. It should have been quoted in the tech specs of the two laptops.

But, to be honest, since they're so similar in price it's likely that they're of similar-ish performance, and as you're unlikely to notice the difference in everyday tasks, I'd say go with the one with the bigger hard drive if the points cancel out the extra initial cost.
