Replacement for Microsoft Money????

Do any of you use special accounting software for your accounts?

I have a mixture of current/savings/credit accounts and I used to use Microsoft Money. This doesn't work for Windows 7 and my old laptop is about to die.

(I am going to try and find 'Geeky Stuff' to post this on too)

I'm still using Microsoft Money and I'm on Windows 7.
Mind you, when I went from XP to Vista, I couldn't import the data and had to re-enter all the info from 2001 to 2009 which took ages!
When you try to install what happens?

I've tried various programs over the years but I always end up coming back to an Excel spreadsheet.

I can do things my way then rather than the way a program wants me to do it.

Marmight - It just won't install. No questions to answer, or anything. Just doesn't like the disc. Did yours just work then? Maybe it's my disc. I'll have another go.

Niceguy2 - I am considering Excel (or a shoebox full of receipts).

I'm using Microsoft Money on Windows 7 too. I'm looking for a replacement though as I don't think they're doing any more updates.

Clayhead - I also asked this question on another thread and an accountant recommended VT Cashbook, which is free and looks like it might do the job. I have a little testing to do on it, but hopefully it's OK.

HSMM - Yep it just worked, I put the disc in and it installed with no problems.

Sorry, that doesn't really help you does it?

I used Money for about 8 years but switched last May to You Need A Budget (YNAB). It's American (so has checking accounts) but can run in £ (and lots of other currencies). I found with Money I was very good at tracking the spending and accounts, but it was all after the spending took place (sometimes weeks after) and it didn't really have much effect on our spending. With YNAB the focus is on the budget and spending rather than where the money is. It has had a hugely positive effect on our spending, as I'm much more aware of how much we're spending in each category and have started to think before buying (rather than just recording it afterwards).

I use YNAB to record all of our spending, but haven't tried downloading statements direct (not even sure if you can). It won't track any investment accounts or shares like Money was supposed to (but never did very well IME).

YNAB is $59.95 (£37ish) for the program and there's also an app for the iphone (not sure how much) that can sync with the main program. But there is a free trial for a week so you can try it before you buy. They've got a support forum and have free seminars and stuff too. See their website www.youneedabudget.com/ for more info.

I have just deleted loads more oif this post as I was sounding like an advert! happy to answer more questions if you like :)

I use VT cashbook. The free version. Its very basic, but if that is what you want, its fine. I am used to using Sage for all the work accounts, but use the VT for my own, so notice its basic-ness more, i suppose. It does the job and you cant really go wrong.
