I want a new toy [stamps foot] and have been drooling looking at iphone ads. I hardly use the mobile I have for calls or texts, but love the idea of apps to play with, so have been thinking about getting an ipod touch instead.

If you have one, what do you use it for?! I need to justify this to DH....

realised I forgot my manners, so please tell me about your ipod touch and thankyou in advance for replies :)

FB and emails mostly - plus a bit of web surfing. Google Earth, um tetris, the Sims, Scrabble. Dd has loads of apps on there - she is always borrowing it.

MmeLindt · 16/03/2011 18:04

I would.

But bloody DS lost it.

Hmpf.

I have iPhone and love it.

Checking weather, twitter, facebook, taking photos, sending texts (free to other iPhone/iPod users), listen to music, checking train times, watching TV, news channels, translation,

And games.

I use mine for various apps and also Internet either when ds or dd has borrowed the computer, or when I am out where there is a wifi hotspot. Also use the notebook function on it quite a lot. I have also been known to mumsnet from the bath (not really recommended but am v careful). And have a rubber skin thing for it. Also keeps DS quiet at boring things like DD's dance lessons.

bumpybecky · 16/03/2011 18:07

can you send texts from the ipod touch then? Confused

will it cook dinner and hoover the hall? that would definitely convince DH Grin

I love it a lot by the way :)

BornToFolk · 16/03/2011 18:08

I have one and it's marvellous. I mostly use it for listening to music and podcasts, and audiobooks too. I have a docking station at home so it gets a lot of use.
I do use apps but not a huge amount. It's useful for train journeys etc though and I'm sure if I commuted I'd go through tons of apps.
Actually DS probably uses the apps more than I do! He's only 3 but there are some really good pre-school ones. It was a lifesaver when we went on holiday. I downloaded Sesame Street video podcasts and some games and it kept him busy for hours in the car.

Having said all that though, I think the iphone would be better. I can use the ipod touch to browse the web at home but not when out and about (unless I connect to a WiFi network) which limits the usefulness of some apps.

Angry birds
Fb
Twitter
MSN
Youtube
eBooks
Kindle
Zombie farm
Guitar Hero
Rock band

It all keeps me happy and I don't have to take my laptop to bed instead!

MmeLindt · 16/03/2011 18:15

You can send texts with the KIK app - but only to others who have the app.

It is available for Android too.

Hulababy · 16/03/2011 18:17

My DD had an ipod Touch. She has music on it and game apps. She also has some photos on it - hers doesn't have the camera as previous model. And she has a couple of videos on too. She uses it mainly for music on a docking station I would say.

DD's is 8gb. I would say you need 16gb though.

bigTillyMint · 16/03/2011 18:30

I got one last week and I LOVE it!

I bought a 32GB (there's not a 16GB one!) one and I have only used about 1/8 of the space with all my music, some pics and a few apps, including books from Kindle.

If you are connected to the internet, you can access all the usual internet stuff and send emails.

The DC will use it for games and maybe some films for emergencies!

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 21:11

Tell me more about being connected to the internet ?

How does it do this? Does it cost a monthly fee?

BadgersPaws · 15/04/2011 21:15

It connects via WIFI, so yes you can pay a fee to people like BT and access their hotspots which are scattered about in certain places. Or just use it at home.

It's not a mobile device as such, it doesn't have a 3G SIM card and can't access the internet on the move.

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 21:31

Thanks I have a wifi connection at home...Will it just work or do I have to set it up?

BadgersPaws · 15/04/2011 21:40

Well you have to do some setting up, I presume that your WIFI is locked down with (at the very least) a password.

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 21:57

I assume so can't really remember.

How can I check?

BadgersPaws · 15/04/2011 22:01

Try connecting with it and see what happens, hopefully it will ask for a password.

If it doesn't and it just gets straight onto the internet then you need to investigate your internet security, anyone could be "stealing" your internet connection and not only using up your "reasonable allowance" but down/uploading all sorts of bad stuff.....

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 22:05

never asks for a password.

oops how do i sort it?

BadgersPaws · 15/04/2011 22:08

"never asks for a password."

What doesn't ask for a password?

Do you have an iPod Touch already?

Are you talking about a computer that you already have in the home?

On most gadgets (iPods, laptops etc.) you only have to enter in the password once and it will remember it. So you shouldn't be prompted every time, but if you bring a new gadget into the house the very first time it connects you shouldn't be able to get straight on.

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 22:09

security it says ....WEP

and i have not ticked the box which says other users can use it.......but no password is asked for.

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 22:11

ah crossed wires there...

I thought you meant my 2 year old laptop asking me for a password.

No i pod touch is info for my son who will of saved up enough money in three weeks time, I am just get the info now.

BadgersPaws · 15/04/2011 22:14

In terms of using an iPod Touch it should be able to connect to that wireless network but at the very least it will ask for the password the first time that it tries to connect.

If you've got WEP security at some point you've typed the password into any gadget/computer/phone that uses the wireless network.

If you've got a particular question about wireless networking it might be worth starting a new thread and stating exactly what the problem is, someone will come along and be able to help you out.

goodbyemrschips · 15/04/2011 22:16

Thanks I believe I wrote any relevant stuff down when I connected so it will all be in the box.

Thanks for your help.
