Nokia vs iphone?

Just upgraded my trusty Nokia 6303 for an iphone (3G 8mb)... but I don't think I like it! I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep it or to return it and get another Nokia instead and could do with some MN wisdom.

Concerns are:

  • I really would prefer a small phone that fits easily into my pocket (like my old Nokia)
  • I am scared of moving away from the good old Nokia controls I am used to
  • I'd like good internet browsing, good Calendar/to do function and GPS which is why I went for the iphone but have now realised I could get all these on a Nokia hence my current indecision...
  • Upgarding to an iphone is cosring me an extra 10 quid a month so don't want to spend this unless I love the phone!

Gaaah, I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone have any thoughts? And any specific Nokia phone recommendations? Or I am prepared to be swayed back to the iphone if you want to try to persuade me!

What is it about the Iphone you don't like?

To be fair, the 3G was ok but a bit slow. The 3GS is way faster and therefore usable.

What apps have you tried?

doricpatter · 03/03/2011 20:53

I have a 5800 and I LOVE it. It's small and light, great touchscreen, great browsing, GPS, calendar, easy text input, reasonable camera and connects up to the PC easily. I'll get the N8 next.

thomasina1 · 03/03/2011 21:13

Thanks Niceguy. Actually it's the 3GS I've got. Haven't even switched it on yet (still in plastic as thinking of returning it!) so maybe I am being a bit unreasonably miserable about it! I think the main thing is the size and weight to be honest, when I am used to my compact Nokia.

I think also I'm a bit worried about how well it works for just phoning and texting... can you convince me that it is fine?

Doric, I like the look of the 5800. May check to see whether that is available on upgrade instead. Like the N8 too but then seems to be a similar size to the iphone so that's not so good for me. Maybe I just need bigger pockets!

i have a nokia smartphone and (as dp warned me) their symbian OS is really not that great.

that doesn't mean i'd necessarily get an iphone tho... i'd probably have gone for something with android were I to be choosing again

thomasina1 · 03/03/2011 21:18

Oh this is getting confusing... so are there any Nokia phones with Android or is that just iphones and htc thingies?

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 03/03/2011 21:19

no, nokia all use symbian

before i chose my nokia, basically for the same reasons as you (i know how to use them!) I was looking at things like the samsung galaxy or similar, which use android

catinthehat2 · 03/03/2011 21:20

I'm an ex Nokia gone to HTC person, it was a good fit.
TExting is ridiculously pathetically easy as I managed to get a Swype keyboard, not available on Iphone
I used to love my Nokias because they were so Functional, and I find the Android operating system appeals in a simiar way.

thomasina1 · 03/03/2011 21:29

OK, so now maybe I should look at HTC as well... I think I am getting even more indecisive about this. I think I had sort of assumed that because I could get a free iphone on upgrade that I ought to - that it was the Gold Standard of smart phones. But perhaps not...

Look at threads about HTC Desires on here, there are a lot of fans for many reasons (I get a lot of use out of mine, mucj more than I expected)
THey appeal to nerdy gadget persons and to people who want to phone & text and enjoy surfing .

thomasina1 · 03/03/2011 21:37

Catinthehat, which HTC model do you have?

And thanks thisisyesterday for the techy info on operating systems, that was helpful.

I really like my Nokia C7 although the software doesn't run properly on my PC, only on dh's laptop. That doesn't bother me too much. Dh has an N8 which is essentially the same but bigger and clunkier with a better camera. I don't like it nearly as much. He does though. I think it's probably more manly in its chunkiness.

catinthehat2 · 03/03/2011 21:43

the desire
I was really dubious about getting a smartphone as I don't buy into Apple as a brand, and there was a monopoly until decent Android phones started apperaing
it has been out for a while now, the desire HD wich has a better screen is also v nice.

thomasina1 · 03/03/2011 21:44

Sorry catinthehat, cross posts. I will do a search for the HTC threads.

Iris, I was actually looking at the C7, that was probably the front runner on my Nokia list.

I think I might try carrying the iphone around a bit and see how it feels! (Yes that is the sort of crazy detail I choose only to impart on MN)

I'm stuck on a long contract with a 5800 and wish I'd gone for the iPhone now I've tried the iPad. I find my nokia a bit chunky and plasticky compared to the iPhone.

thisisyesterday · 03/03/2011 21:48

it's the C7 I have too!

the issue i have with the OS is that it can be really annoyingly slow at times.

functionally it works as you would expect a nokia to work! although there are a few things that aren't that intuitive that it's taken me ages to work out. AND it keeps on reverting the bloody date to yyyy-mm-dd which annoys me no end.

My advice would be to go to a shop like phones 4 u or somewhere and try some out.

I dislike apple as a brand. but i don't know a single person with an iphone who doesn't love it! and dp says that technically speaking they are really very good

Niceguy2 · 03/03/2011 22:05

thomasina1, I think you need to look at it in a different way.

The iphone is actually a fairly mediocre phone. If you want a good phone, you can get them for a tenner. The battery lasts for DAYS & you can talk on them.

But you can't really surf the web on them. You can't check google maps to see where you are & see realtime traffic (useful just before you go for a long drive).

Nor can you play games like Angry Birds, Cut the rope, Fifa etc. on a normal phone.

Can a normal phone tell you how far you ran, the calories you burned?

Can your normal phone let you watch BBC iplayer, live TV, read the news, update facebook? Notify you when people respond?

Can you sync documents with your phone and take them with you when you travel? Store all your passwords securely encrypted?

If the answer to that is "I'm not really bothered by any of the above" then save yourself some cash & get a normal phone! Smile

Nokia phones are pants in my opinion. Even their chief exec agrees. Link here

Oops, sorry its a bit of a saga!

catinthehat2 · 03/03/2011 22:41

I agree with Niceguy who is a dedicated phone purist and has his finger on some freakishly good deals re PHONES.....but I also think a SMARTPHONE is almost indispensible once you get one. And until you have one you don't realise why you would get so much use out of it.

Fragglicious · 03/03/2011 22:50

I have the Nokia 5800. I love it. DH has an iphone and I think it's shit. The only benefit seems to be the ability to play Angry Birds. My phone does all the main things he does -- better.
Go to a phone shop and play with some phones. \See which ones you like the feel of.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2011 19:13

i kwym

i am a nokia fan, had them for years, was once the owner of a brick 15+yrs ago Blush

'strokes lovingly'

yes i could mn/google/email on nokia but iphone is faster and can have up to 8 sites on the go to view easily

i was a bit Shock at the size of it, and wouldnt fit in my party handbag Hmm but a new bigger black bag solved that

thomasina1 · 04/03/2011 21:36

Just wanted to update - I decided to keep the iPhone and despite my initial reservations I am almost won over! I have already used iplayer and some game apps to keep my toddler amused and was getting very excited this evening using the scan feature on the ocado app. Even my typing skills seem to be improving. Thank you all for your input yesterday . I'm off to look at the iPhone threads now!

I just got the Nokia 6700 classic and I love it. Looks good, works well, easy to use - no drama.

Fits in my pocket, I'm sure it has the internet, but that's really not my bag baby.
