A message popped up today, which looked like a microdift message, saying click here to protect your machine.
I clicked, and things started flashing etc, but i closed it as I had an inkling it wasn't right.
Some new icons appeared on my desktop (I think) and i keep geeting messages popping up saying I have a security issue and to click here to remove them. It looks like the microsoft shield thing but it isn't I don't think. And anyhow my antivirus in McAfee with bt.

So I did a full scan, it says everything is fine but I have 1 trojan!? It doesn't give me any option to fix it that I can see.

I have moved the new icons to recycle bin, but that doesn't get rid of them i know. I can't find what to delete or fix and I'm not sure what I'm doing tbh.

Anyone got any kind of clue what I need to be doing please!?
Am using ds's laptop for this as I have switched mine off and don't want to log on with ittill it's fixed

It sounds like McAfee just isolated the Trojan automatically?

The messages sound like they were your antiirus software running automatically and telling you something was wrong.

If your PC is working fine now it sounds like the antivirus software has done its job.

I would run updates on the antvirus software and do a full scan again.

It might have been this virus I think I had it, but luckily didnt click anything as I could tell it was suspect. just closed it and ran a virus check as normal and all was fine. Id try a scan from your normal screen to establish it wasnt malware, or to remove it if it was.

sockonmyhead · 03/03/2011 07:56

I had the virus treacle has linked to, mcaffe didn't even notice it was there when I scanned. I had to download malwarebytes (free) to get rid of it so you could try that

HattiFattner · 03/03/2011 08:06

yep, malware bytes will find and clean it. Its exceedingly annoying.

Niceguy2 · 03/03/2011 09:28

Two things to try.

First, since you know exactly when it happened, do a system restore to a point before the infection. See if that works.

If not, download a copy of Malwarebytes, reboot in "safe mode with networking", install it and run a scan.

Hi and thanks for the replies. Am at work so will have try and sort it when i get home.

My computer isn't/hasn't been fixed by McAfee as the box saying click here to stop identity theft keeps poppping up. I also keep getting requests for this program to connect to the internet (which obviously I'm refusing)
If I reboot the computer it is saying do I want to shut down with these security issues.

Am heading home now so hopefully can sort it from what's been said above. Otherwise I will be back!

Ok had a hectic few days so haven't even tackled this.
Not sure how I would start in safe mode. Or how to go about installing it from safe mode...
Do I download it to my computer before i reboot in safe mode or after?
Anyone able to hold my hand with this please...?

I don't actually want to use the computer unless i have too, so bit reluctnt to go online etc with it!

Ok, it looks like it's removed the problem using the malwarebyte thing. Thanks for that.

Two more things have arisen though -

  1. A program called System Configuration Utility is asking for permission to connect to the internet. I don't know what this is. It is saying it's Microsoft Windows, but the virus was saying that too, so am not convinced!

Can anyone advise if it is legit and ok to allow to connect? I don't want to allow if it's going to let the virus back on!
If not how do I get rid of it!?

  1. Saw some stuff in the McDonalds advert thread where people were saying they had advert blockers to stop advert showing up. As it seems likely this is how I got the virus can anyone recommend a good advert blocking program, preferably a free one :)

Many thanks

I can't comment on point 1. There is a Windows component called System Configuration Utility, but I've never known it ask to connect to the Internet, so it could be malicious code that is mis-naming itself. Perhaps just say no for now?

Ad blockers are normally browser extensions. You don't say which browser you're using, but there's a good one for firefox called Adblock Plus available here. I don't use IE, but I believe there's a similar one for it called AdBlockIE. Not a personal recommendation though as I have no experience of it! HTH.
