Any ideas I checked Sunday night & it was 7.5(ish) tonight it's 9.3

That's a lot

DD has not been on iplayer since

I have been MNetting but that is a hell of a lot of MNetting

Looked at train times, did some google Earth stuff

But it seems a bit steep!!

Do you perhaps have automatic updates turned on and a big patch came down?

Or what about peer to peer applications like Bittorrent or Frostwire?

NetworkGuy · 23/02/2011 04:04

Is your wi-fi secure or open to access by neighbours?

Have you checked for any virus or malware (as your machine[s] might have been used without your knowledge to [attempt] spam - or downloading material under remote control - or worse - uploading material from your hard drive, to see if there are items with personal identification details).

Is there any chance of having clicked an iPlayer download for something in HD, which went on in the background ?

I've noticed that some of the schedule pages (which show programmes, and to the right show your favourites and have download marker) will download an HD version if there's the "watch in HD" text. Nowadays I click the link for the TV show and then click on that specific 'download' option. It is an extra step but doesn't download 1.3 GB when the show can be half that size in standard definition (SD).

I download 2 to 3 times that amount each day, but understand you are surprised to see a high level if you usually have lower quantity of traffic.

How much time were you spending on Google Earth ? It has been a while since I used it, but it might have downloaded updates and [lots of] new images, depending on what you were doing.

KatyMac · 23/02/2011 07:30

Maybe the automatic updates but not the p2p (at least not knowingly)

I ran malwarebytes & aid for AVG

I 'walked' about a mile on google earth (DD & DH were lost in london)

I am ringing them today to check

Sorry - it's secure too

Just curious now as to whether that same 'walk' would use more or less using Google Earth vs Google Street view. I know it might be more tricky with Street view, but am just curious about quantity of data.

At least your machine and network seem secure enough not to be suffering from hacking/malware, which is good, but still not much closer to an answer, unfortunately.

KatyMac · 23/02/2011 08:51

Actually my walk was on street view - Camden tube to Kentish town

But I phoned BT & on sunday I used more than 4 time my highest ever usage so "maybe I need to change my network key"

So I will - when I remember how Hmm

Needs you to get connected to the router (via a cable) to change it, and then change each wireless device afterwards.

nannynick · 23/02/2011 12:29

There is some discussion about the BT Usage Monitor on community.bt.com - seems that for some users the monitor has been removed. So maybe there is a fault with it, or maybe it is just an issue with a recent BT website update. Also a user on the board mentions that the usage monitor says they use 9GB a day, where as their router shows 1GB.

You haven't got any PS3, WII or other such devices connected have you? Doubt you have but I know some childcare providers have such games in their setting and some children know how to download things (plus games self-update).

KatyMac · 23/02/2011 12:46

No, but I have upgraded to 40 gB for 5.40 less a month HmmConfused
