I have the model with Wireless and 3G. If you have both, it gives you added flexibility. You can download things either with wireless (if you're connected) or, if you're out and about, via 3G.

The advantage of the Amazon Kindle is that - unlike with mobiles phones/an iPad - you don't have to have a contract for 3G or pay any extra for it.

If you can afford it, I'd go for the model with both.

so is it worth the extra £40 then?

to be honest he would only ever use it either at home or on holiday. how does the kindle work exactly? once youve downloaded a book is it there no matter where you go? so i mean could you download a book then go on hols?

like i said....total heathen!

Yes, once you download it, it's there! So you could download and go on holiday. You can download loads of books and go on holiday.

I would say it's worth the £40, but that's obviously a decision for you.

Let's say your DH is away from home and wants something to read. He's read all his books and needs something else to read. He can't access the internet with wireless because he's not connected to your home network, and there isn't a wifi spot nearby. In this situation he would use the 3G connectivity and it would download a book for him.

Does that help?!

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/02/2011 01:26

i see! thanks for that. probably is worth the extra then.

I'd pay it, I have to say - given that they provide 3G free, it's worth it.

fluffles · 12/02/2011 12:02

i have the wifi only one and it's absolutely fine for me - i load lots of books on at home before holidays and have found quite a lot of wifi out and about.

but if he wants to subscribe to daily downloads like newspapers then i can see that 3g would be good

silverfrog · 12/02/2011 12:09

Mine is just a WiFi one. Dh has the 3g version.

He gout 3g because he gets newspapers/journals delivered daily, and he travels a lot.

I only need WiFi, as I can load up with books/magazines/documents before a holiday, so wouldn't need to download on the move. We usually end up having computer access on holiday anyway, for various reasons, so if I was desperate I could download. But given I can bung a hundred books on before I skip off for my fortnight in the sun, it is unlikely I would ever need to download on holiday.

So basically it depends on what your dh is likely to want to read. But yes, if you can afford without too much trouble, the 3g one is better. But alternately, you could spend the extra £40 on books...

kayah · 12/02/2011 12:16

I also heard that you can use 3g to send emails when abroad.
Apparently browser is a bit clunky, but it works.

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/02/2011 15:41

cheers for this, i can see how the 3g would be worth the extra but then he doesnt travel...im going to have to do some secret fishing to see which he would prefer!

I didn't really think the extra for the 3g was worth it.

It holds so many books so it should be plenty for a long holiday.

Also who actually needs a book that urgently that they can't wait to get home?
