Hi, my DC's have an Xbox and now we can't use it. Two friends have said that it is because it has overheated and the outcome is that it has suffered the REd Ring of Death and there is no return. Has anyone heard of this and can you please help as don't want to have to buy a new one. thank you!

if still in warrenty they should replace it

You need to call Microsoft and ask them about the warranty, if you have an earlier box they were extending it to 5yrs cover for this reason. When you call you will need the serial number off the back. We had one exchanged after 3ys but we got it again at Christmas and have had to buy a new one.
I think we were quoted £95 to repair it but decided to get a new one.

It's generally overheating, but it can be other things. If it's in warranty get it replaced, otherwise if it is overheating, it can be repaired. DH has fixed it before (not on ours, but on a friends)

There are ads in the back of games magazines for people who will fix it (about £50 DH says), or try an independent Games retailer. DH said if you were anywhere near us (south London) he'll have a look. If you know anyone with a bit of tech know-how there are loads of tech sites/youtube videos that give a step by step guide to fixing it.

As I understand it there were three different models of third party CDRom used in the manufacturing process, depending on exactly where the xbox was made. and one of these is very prone to failure and results in the machine getting the red ring of death. Best fixed with a new one.

BTW I think they should have done a recall. It's pretty shoddy quality management.

when this happened to DS's he sent it back to Microsoft & they actually replaced it with a new one

It's got nothing to do with the DVDrom and yes there was 3 different ones on the models before the Elite and slim, Samsung, Toshiba and BenQ I believe it was and the quality of those drives was in the same order as well, you could tell which one you had by the shape of the disc tray but all the 360's where made in the same factory, but the DVDrom being shit just causes disc read errors it's not RROD and unfortunately all the DVDroms in em are now BenQ (Siemens to you, because they are cheap).

RROD = 3 year extended warranty, you don't need proof of purchase, their is a manufacturing date written on the back of every unit (not sure about the slim but it will be encoded in the serial number anyway).

RROD is overheating of the CPU or AGP due to the poor design of the case/rubbish thermal paste and moaning of idiots who don't want to hear fan noise.

How do you reduce fan noise for moaning idiots who want silent electronics and don't think about why their console/PC sounds like a demented bee?.

You fit a fan that produces slower air flow or add a stupid speed controller.

Personally I like all my electronics to sound like the world is coming to an end and this PC makes my legs cold.
