Adobe Acrobat (the full version) does have a function to save the pdf as a rtf or word file.

However the accuracy and completeness of the translation depends on the quality of the original and for some weird reason sometimes it seems to reverse sentences.

You can get some tools that convert pdf to html, but again they are very patchy.

thanks liamsdaddy. I might have to re-think this then.

Have you tried the various options in Adobe Reader? It might well depend on how the pdf was produced in the first place, but I've just looked at a pdf file and under the "File" tab there's a "save as text" option; alternatively, under the "Edit" tab there's a "copy to clipboard" option. Both worked reasonably well when pasted into Word, but formatting was lost.

oh, I forgot the obvious one.

Print the pdf, and if you have a scanner that can do OCR, scan it.

In the past I've had an issue with pdf's for which some pages where essentially images and the text was partially/entirely stored in the form of a large embedded jpg.

If the originator has locked the document with security then your only open method is to contact the originator.
