Is it just me, or is Safari just a PITA???

We have had our Mac a year - naturally it came with Safari as standard and knowing bugger all not a lot about computers, I did not realise you could load up any browser you liked or whatever.

Safari started "playing up" and freezing/crashing after a while. Only does it in phases, can be fine for weeks then go through its phase of crashing.

I recently discovered Firefox, so have that as a back up browser. I don't use it a whole lot, but it has never crashed on me.

Is Safari known for crashing? Am I better off just switching browsers permanently and ditching Safari??

As you can probably guess, it is currently in one of its phases and I nearly missed a great item on Ebay when it had a "moment"!!!

but but but I don't undersatnd, Apple products are infallible, and any thing Mac-cy would never crash, ,it's only Windows & pcs that do that sort of thing. It must be something YOU'RE doing.

Ditch the darn thing & use Firefox, I would!

TheVisitor · 22/01/2011 14:56

You might need to update it. Safari is normally very stable.

RustyBear · 22/01/2011 14:57

I only use safari on the iPad & iPhone and it always seems much better and quicker than firefox- often people are complaining about how slow MN is and I haven't noticed at all.

Update it???

Would it not update automatically, or give me a "do you want to update" type thing to click OK on if a new version were available?

I need to get my favourites/bookmarks across to Firefox methinks

At least then, if one crashes I can simply switch across...

you can get it to check for updates:

in the "apple" menu, there's a check for updates option - see what it says.

I too have only ever found safari to be stable.

LovelyJudy · 22/01/2011 15:33

could it be your internet connection that's failing, rather than safari?

if you google 'safari crash' you'll find, not as you might imagine, pictures of zebras, giraffes, lions, and jeeps all mixed up together, but lots of people describing their experiences and if necessary, fixes.

we have a mac, i rarely use safari, prefering firefox, but i've never noticed s crashing.

You may have incorrupt permissions in your Safari. Even macs need a bit of maintenance now and again.
If you haven't yet. download ONYX (google it, it's free) and run each of the tabs it comes up with... it's basically a clean up programme and is good for sorting out issues like that. My Safari started crashing a lot and it turned out some or other file was corrupt.

I'd also try Google Chrome for mac.. it's very stable now and I personally prefer it to Safari or Firefox:)

It just "quit unexpectedly" with a load of coded stuff in the exit window.

I don't think it is the broadband as everything else works a treat, it's only Safari that struggles.

All helpful stuff, thanks, will work my way through these excellent ideas.

Frankly I am clueless on this stuff so sorry if it all seems a bit basic!

I prefer Safari on Apple machines and Firefox on Microsoft ones. Never have any hassle with them.

Repairing permissions is a very good thing to do when a Mac is behaving in unusual ways. You don't need Onyx to do it (though Onyx does make it very easy), just bring up disk utilities (using Finder look in the utilities part of applications folder) and there will be a button to do it from there.

I've never really had any trouble with Safari on a Mac.

However the early Windows versions were rubbish.
