Can anyone help with the following please...

I need to be able to access my files from any pc anywhere and think that some sort of online file storage system would be the way to go - can anyone recommend anywhere reliable and cheap and perhaps explain a bit about how it works?

Also, I need to be able to have a fax number i can receive and send faxes from/to. Rather than buying a fax machine and getting a dedicated number someone mentioned some pc based system. Again, could anyone recommend something reliable/cheap and explain how it works.

I'm a pc numpty... does it show?!

Thank you.

Drop box. You download it onto your machine(s). You can access via the internet. It automatically updates. It's free up to a limit and is great. Grin

Google Docs might also be worth a look. I don't use it, so I can't tell you much about it.

I started off using Google Docs but hated the fact that I could only use it when online; then I opened a Dropbox account and downloaded the Dropbox software onto my PC and I love it! I can work on my files offline and when online it syncs all my files for me. This really helps as I work on three different computers in three different locations.

Sounds like Dropbox is the way to go - thanks so much.

Can anyone recommend any fax services?!

Thanks.

I use Soho66 for PCFax, other services include MyFax and POPFax.

Dropbox is brilliant, although if you really want to use 'any pc anywhere' e.g. drop into an internet cafe and work on a file then you don't get most of the benefits over, say, Google Docs which is more geared to this kind of usage.

MrAnchovy but I can access my files from the Dropbox website too, once I login to the site. So I could use it in internet cafes too.

"I need to be able to have a fax number i can receive and send faxes from/to"

Depends a little on whether you want to fax to any country, or just the UK. Also regarding having a 'dedicated number' I assume you meant you don't want a dedicated line (you will surely want a number available for faxing).

Some services in the past offered faxes on 0870 numbers but things have changed and they may now use 0844 / 0871 which are more costly for the sender (and also, may fail if called from abroad).

I've used some fax-to-email services in the past but in one case they provided software to view the faxes, which means it would not be so useful if you found yourself in an internet cafe in San Francisco and all the machines were running Linux... (don't laugh, I've been in such a cafe and spent many an hour there when they had 100 days of rain, and sightseeing was a bit 'washed out').

For the fax stuff wirefast.com do fax to email and email to fax. It's mainly aimed at corporates and might not be cheap for a single number, but it can't hurt to ask.

There's also a service at www.efax.co.uk, which may be more appropriate to your needs?

Thanks everyone...

Networkguy, yes sorry I meant I don't want a dedicated phone line.

Will check out efax.
