NO specific comment on this, but was just looking to see if the classics are as cheap as reputed (they are - hooray!).

But - why are there zillions of versions of each, and why are some more expensive than others, for example? How do you shop around for 'books' for your kindle?

I am very excited - hope it's not a let down...

Are you going to use it as an ornament because you know you're never going to get chance to read it!

specialsmasher · 08/01/2011 21:21

I thought maybe I could prop it / hold it in one hand whilst feeding or something? Am I spectacularly naive?

Oh god...

On no not at all, I was only joking. Actually it's a fab idea, you spend many hours in the early months sat on the couch feeding

TheLogLady · 08/01/2011 21:25

luckeeee.

i got Take that's best hits (first time around) Grin

comewhinewithme · 08/01/2011 21:25

WilfShelf · 08/01/2011 21:27

TitsalinaBumSquash · 08/01/2011 21:28

All the real classics are free! Im currently reading Little Women. Smile

silverfrog · 08/01/2011 21:28

oh, it will be ace.

I wish I had had one when my girls were small, insteadof having t juggle books one handed, anglign them towards the hall llight to try to read a bit more...

a nice little kindle, in a case with a light, would have been just the ticket, tbh. load it up with a nice selection of books, and away you go.

I got one for Christmas this year, and I have barely put it down Grin

absolutely fantastic.

TitianTinselTemptress · 08/01/2011 21:37

Smasher from your title I thought you were planning to read books during labour! Grin

PerArduaAdNauseum · 08/01/2011 22:08

Get one of these for no-hands reading - much cheaper than the Amazon covers too. And if you download this software, you can put anything from your PC onto your kindle more or less. So you can download all of the classics completely free from Project Gutenberg and you're sorted.

(Bit of a kindle addict, can you tell?)

specialsmasher · 09/01/2011 07:05

Oh good! Excited again now - will make sure I track down properly free classics.

No, no reading whilst actually giving birth, though I can see how my title might suggest it, titian!

Brilliant tips thanks, PerArdua - off to investigate!

Was just investigating, PerArdua - love the case!

On the Gutenberg page (how brilliant!) it says you can have Kindle format - do I still need to download the software? I'm sure I'll find out when I try, but just thought I'd ask!

PerArduaAdNauseum · 09/01/2011 18:22

You do need the software to do the actual transfer from PC to kindle. I think you can send stuff to your kindle via email, but haven't investigated - it's just been too convenient to drag and drop vast swathes of reading matter Grin

specialsmasher · 09/01/2011 21:08

Thanks so much. Hope the fact that I have a mac not a problem. Can't wait to get my hands on said vast swathes! Grin

You don't need any software for Project Gutenberg. You just choose kindle format and download. At least that worked for me this week. I am currently working my way through Angela Brazil.

coastgirl · 09/01/2011 21:20

I've got one of the cases PerArdua linked to and it's ace!

You can download PG books directly onto your Kindle using the browser, btw - I've done it and it works.

silverfrog · 09/01/2011 22:23

I have a mac too, and no problems so far :-) (am only 10 days into Kindle ownership, though!)

Calibre works fine, haven't yet fully investigated PG

specialsmasher · 10/01/2011 07:38

How brilliant it all is - can't wait! The kindle isn't actually ordered yet & I'm getting impatient!

It also (if you were the type of person that doesn't mind that it is technically illegal, and of course, I'm not advocating it...) could be a good idea to have a look at ways of getting books from torrenting sites...

There is plenty availible legally to torrent, and it is by far the quickest way to download (500 books would take around one minute or less)- it works in the same way as music and video if you have ever done those.

There are also loads of free books on amazon itself. Those ones are the out of copyright ones that are older, usually.

sux2bsanta · 10/01/2011 08:01

smiling...also thought from title you were going to use in labour. Intended typing 'Good luck with that'!

second amazon...also free books there, not just classics. Enjoy.

specialsmasher · 10/01/2011 20:18

So just to be clear - it's OK to use Project Gutenberg - even though I thought the things about Kindles was you had to get stuff from amazon - it's all OK & not going to blow up my lovely new (& now ordered!) machine?

OP posts:
specialsmasher · 10/01/2011 20:19

thing - not things.

OP posts:
specialsmasher · 10/01/2011 20:26

No worries - I see you can access it via amazon, so it must be fine! It seems to want me to choose 'mobipocket' or something. Hope that's right - I've got a lot to learn!
