And why?

My upgrade is due and I'm trying to work out which is best.

So which phone do you prefer?

HTC.

There's very little difference tbh, aside from the obvious apple/google apps etc.

There's a HUGE difference in price (the HTC Desire is apparently around £80 on contract now which is a bargain!)
The other thing is that iPhone comes with 16 or 32gb, and HTC Desire with 2gb (easily upgraded though will cost - depends how much music etc you want to store on your phone)

Do you have a PC or a Mac at home? HTC software will only work on a PC, so that's a consideration.

Another major thing to think about is that Angry Birds is free on android phones Wink

HTC wins hands down for me, it's reliable and DP (iPhone user) is jealous of my HTC :)

VivaLeBeaver · 08/01/2011 20:05

htc - you can expand the memory, I put a 32gb sd card in mine. I like the fact there is a home and a back button on it, actual physical buttons.

It supports flash.

The battery is removeable and you can buy a 2nd cheaply, so if you're away from electricity and can't charge you can take a 2nd battery.

You can use the phone to give other things a wifi signal - no idea how it works but its magic. So if I'm camping and tehre is no wifi but the phone has a signal, the phone can turn its signal into wifi for another device. So I can then turn my laptop on and get on the internet.

HTC

For the reasons that Pocket and Viva have stated, but also because it's lovely and shiny and pretty and not what every other bugger in the world has got an iphone.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/01/2011 20:22

Yes, the HTC is a bit more techy/geeky so I can look down my nose at sheep people with an iphone. Wink

RustyBear · 08/01/2011 20:28

My iPhone is much nicer than DS's HTC - just so much easier to use, faster and much more reliable.

bubbleandsqueaks · 08/01/2011 20:59

I have a 3G and am tempted to try the HTC just to see what it's like.

But I do love the iPhone.

What is more techy/geeky about the HTC?

I need more info. before I can decide - What are the things that you really make one phone better than the other?

OP posts:
Niceguy2 · 08/01/2011 21:35

I had both. I wrote quite a long post some time ago about it in reply to another poster with the same dilemma but I can't find it to link to.

As phones go, the HTC Desire is hell of a phone.

The best thing about Android is how open it is. Anyone can make a phone & write an application for it.

The worst thing about Android is how open it is. Anyone can make a phone & write an application for it.

Whats happened is that a lot of apps are well....crap but they are getting better. So many different phones with Android has meant loads of different versions so you'll find sometimes apps wont work on your phone. Or that there are bugs.

I had my Desire for a week and in that time found at least 3 bugs.

I went back to the iphone as it may not be as leading edge in terms of software. But it just works!

So my advice is if you can afford it, go for the iphone. If you can't....or you just love a phone where you have hundreds of options to twiddle and don't mind spending a week twiddling then sure get the Desire.

Viva I have a HTC desire ( my old phone was 9 years old and I am not a very tech person) how do you make HTC turn into a WiFi for laptop ( is this WiFi hotspot )

VivaLeBeaver · 08/01/2011 22:02

Yes, its the wifi hotspot option.

I've never had a bug with my HTC apart from Friendstream stopped updating for a bit. Quick google and I found some advice saying to sign out then in of facebook, twitter - did that and it worked.

All the apps I've downloaded have been fine. I use appbrain to find apps and read the reviews on there before downloading any. There's a neat looking app I found today but loads of reviews saying it doesn't work so haven't downloaded it.

Niceguy2 · 09/01/2011 00:07

Hi Viva

It was a while back now when it was 2.1 but I remember that the default messaging app kept telling me I had an unread message when I'd read it. My friend also had it on her Desire so its not just me.

Also, when using the Facebook contact integration, if Vodafone then text me it would randomly choose a facebook contact and tell me the SMS was from them.

Oh and the sound from the speaker was absolutely terrible.

Some apps just looked really amateurish but hopefully that will change or will have already.

I do miss the widgets though and wish Apple would do something similar.

AitchTwoOh · 09/01/2011 00:13

i really like my desire, never had any problems with it (although now realise that my friendstream hasn't updated in a while, lol) and basically couldn't have got an iphone when i realised that it was going to cost me twice as much for half as many minutes. that seemed ridiculous, given that they are both just phones at the end of the day.

Orissiah · 13/01/2011 09:39

I have an HTC and really like it (and it has good apps) but still find my old iPhone was easier to type on and more touch responsive.

Orissiah · 13/01/2011 09:41

To follow on, when my contract allows me to change phones I will go back to iPhone for above reasons.

tostaky · 17/01/2011 11:01

sorry to highjack the thread but which HTC is best?
I dont want the one with the keyboard though

Niceguy2 · 17/01/2011 11:47

I'd probably say best value phone has to be the HTC wildfire.

But the best price/performance the is HTC Desire.

The BEST HTC is the HTC Desire HD (but personally I find it a bit big)

friendly · 21/01/2011 12:41

I love my htc desire. Dh has had an iphone since they came out and although I fancied one I couldn't justify the cost. Ds 13 thinks my phone is cooler that dh's iphone which made me smile. I don't have music on my htc. I use it as a phone, text on it and surf the web. It is so fast and cool and I quite like being a bit different. Quick hijack. Do htc's use a virus protection thingy on their phones? I surf everyday, check fb etc and have never been aware of bugs. Big vote for the htc!

BigGitDad · 21/01/2011 12:50

BNice guy makes an important point about the apps on an HTC phone anyone can write them and that can compromise security. If you want the apps use Iphone as Apple limit are very strict on who they let on.
I have an HTC Touch HD which is good, I tend to use my phone just for emails/texting/internet and phone calls.
I am due to upgrade in April and will probably go for either Windows 7 or Android on the Desire HD. I did borrow one an Android a while back and was very impressed with it.
That said Mrs BGD has an iphone and swears by it.

Flojo1979 · 21/01/2011 23:10

I'm due an upgrade and no zero about apps n phones etc, they'll see me coming a mile off in the shop and i'll end up with god knows what.
The desire has been mentioned a lot thats £99 on the upgrade plus monthly costs. The mozart one is free, with snapdragon processor, is this one no good?

rougelapin · 21/01/2011 23:26

I've just upgraded and got an htc Desire HD. It arrived yesterday - it's flipping huge! Hugenesss aside, it seems to be pretty snazzy. Think it's going to take me a looong time to figure it all out though. Sure with a little practise all will be fine.

I personally didn't want an iphone - everyone seems to have one, fancied something a bit different. Read a lot of reviews, the Desire HD seemed to be on a par with the iphone 4.

What's all this about having to pay for a phone on an upgrade? Mine was free!

Flojo1979 · 22/01/2011 11:29

It was with orange, on 2 yr contact, the desire was reduce from not sure what to £99
