I have a Belkin wireless router, and use Windows 7 on a samsung laptop

I need to reboot the router about five times a night.

Anyone got any clue what might be wrong, and how i might fix it?

It is unusual to need to reboot the router that often - doing so can cause your internet connection to be made slower if your ISP uses BT kit at the exchange because the exchange will think the phone line is too poor to maintain a decent speed.

When you lose connection, what steps do you take to re-establish the link on the laptop (eg click disconnect, then wait 30 seconds, then search for the Belkin router).

How far away is the Belkin router ? Can you stay connected if you sit in the same room for a longer period ?

Do you really need to reboot the router. Might it reconnect if left to it's own devices for a bit?

My first guess would be interference from other equipment in the neighbourhood. You can download software that shows you which channels are used by other routers in the vicinity, e.g. inSSIDer. That will only show you wifi networks. It won't show you other equipment that could be interfering. The solution would be to change the channel used by your router.

Alternatively, I would fall back on a mate's opinion that Belkin kit is rubbish and suggest replacing it with something from Netgear or Linksys.

What do you mean you lose your wireless connection?

What exactly happens? Do websites simply stop and you get the page cannot be displayed? Or do you get a little message at the bottom left saying your wireless network in unavailable?

If it's the latter then chances are its interference with another wireless network or video sender/baby monitor/device.

If it's the first then it could be a phone line issue. I had the same and my ISP had to tweak my ADSL speed profile to maintain a stable line.

it seems to be a mixture of both. I spoke to the isp this morning and the line is fine, and if I unplug the wireless and hard wire it into the laptop I can get on. It is very odd.

Sounds to me then it's probably interference. There are so many wireless networks around nowadays. Add to the fact there are many other devices all using the same 2.4Ghz frequency and frankly its amazing there's not more problems.

If you have a techie friend or the manual, try to change the channel number until you find one which is more stable.

I am going to take your advice and find a tekkie friend I think ... thank you
