Security Certificates?

Back in the UK and on Mum's computer...something has gone horribly wrong and we are clueless, anyone advise please?

Every website I try and access (inc MN and other innoccuous ones) are showing the Microsoft warning page (address highlighted in red on the browser) saying this site's security certificare is not valid etc. I can proceed to the website, and all seems OK, but there is obviously Something Wrong.

I'm about to run scan and see what it throws up.

If you're on Windows and you've not got it already do download and run something like the free version of Malware Bytes (www.malwarebytes.org/), it might be that you have something lurking on your computer.

Can you provide some more detail about what OS (e.g. Windows XP) and which Browser (e.g. IE7) you are using?

BadgersPaws · 20/12/2010 11:40

Oh and check the date and time setting for your computer are right.

Bucharest · 22/12/2010 12:00

Badgers, sorry for not getting back, been panic buying.
The date and time are wrong- the date has been starting from zero I noticed when I log on, but right now it's showing 13.48 (it's really 11.55)
It's windows XP IE7.
I'll d/l the Malware Bytes (I have that on my own computer) and see what the scan pulls up.
Thanks for your help!

Do check the full date and time and make sure that they're roughly right (as in day, month and year should be correct, the time can slip a bit).

Bucharest · 22/12/2010 13:54

OK- will do that now.
Scan finished: 28 infected items, 15 registry keys, 1 registry data item, 8 folders, 4 files. All quarantined and removed.

Date was showing 2/01/2002 Shock
Time 13.47.
Have changed them and will reboot now and see how we're going.

After the reboot check the date and time again. If the computer is a desktop plugged into a wall then try shutting it down, unplugging it, plugging it back in, booting up again and then seeing if the date and time are still there.

Certificates do have valid date ranges within them so if your computer thinks it's outside of that range then it will complain.

I've just started getting the same thing!

WilfShelf · 22/12/2010 14:21

Time and date correct here. Am running full diagnostic scan now.

gallicgirl · 22/12/2010 14:24

I'm getting security warnings and it's not letting me onto lots of threads. Time and date ok, running avg ok. I have just downloaded Vista service pack 2 though....really Microsoft....hmmm???????

NetworkGuy · 22/12/2010 14:34

gallicgirl - the blocking of threads is not the same problem - see this thread - blocking should disappear in a while - there's info from MNHQ posted around 09:00 about some advert having caused the blocking.

gallicgirl · 22/12/2010 15:24

Found that one now, thanks. I think this was the only thread I could get onto at the time!
