Me, actually. I think I want a kindle thingy, but despite extensive reading I can't get my head around the difference between the £109 and £149 models. They are both wifi (so far so good) but the more expensive one is apparently 3G or something. I can't work out what this means tbh. Can anyone explain in words of very few syllables what the difference is? And be gentle, I can't work my mobile phone. Thanks.

The £109 one can be used to connect to amazon using any wifi, eg at home, in starbucks etc.
the £149 has its own internet connection (like a smartphone) so you can use it anywhere there's a signal.

The kindle only needs to be connected when you are downloading books, so unless you travel a lot or have no access to wifi, the £109 version should be sufficient. Just load up books when you are at home or wherever.

Ah. Ok. So, I only really need the cheaper one? I don't travel as such. Hmmm.

I'm getting the 3g one. a) because I'm greedy, and b) I want to use the browser cos I can't do it on my smartphone

Browser? Eh? Can I browse with the 3G? Now you've confused me even more (which is, granted, not hard to do). Explain yourself, Bonnie.

I'm not that sure myself, but with 3g you have an "experimental" browser and can get online for free anywhere with 3g coverage.
You know you can put mp3s and podcasts on it too? And, and I love this bit, most kindle books have text to speech enabled, so it will read to you!!

I'm getting a fancy-ass cover/stand as well from my big bro Smile

MaeMobley · 23/11/2010 23:20

I have the 3G one but don't use the browser. i don't find it that user friendly.

BonniePrinceBilly · 23/11/2010 23:27

Don't put it next to your phone though Chickens, or your new Kindle will hate you too!

sammac · 23/11/2010 23:32

Mine arrived today ( for Christmas!) Couldn't resist a peek so locked myself in the loo and it worked fine from there. It's the 3g one as I didn't want to be restricted to hooking up to the computer to download, so I can get books whilst on holiday or elsewhere. I could justify it all night!!

TheBeast · 24/11/2010 02:19

The non-3G Kindle also has the experimental browser but, of course, you can only use it when you have WiFi access.

ChickensHaveNoMercyForTurkeys · 24/11/2010 09:06

Oh balls. Now I'm uber confused. My phone really hates me, so now I'm wondering whether I am too thick to operate a Kindle. But I want it

The Kindle browser is awful. It's not really designed to be a full on browser so might be useful for reading emails but no more than that.

The Kindle, itself, is wonderful.

MmeLindt · 24/11/2010 17:16

The browser is very basic. I have the previous Kindle and cannot MN on it.

I have heard that the new one is not much better.

If you just want it for reading then the 3G if you are going to download on the go.

If you want a proper browser then you need a iPad.

BonniePrinceBilly · 24/11/2010 17:41

bugger, really? think I just wasted some money then......

MmeLindt · 24/11/2010 17:59

Not a waste of money. I would always buy the 3G version.

Depending where you go on holiday, it is not always easy to find a Wifi hotspot.

I would have run out of books this summer with the wifi version. As it was I could sit on a beach in France and download a book.

overthemill · 24/11/2010 18:05

i loved our kindle but dh dropped it on holiday and we cant afford t replace it (and we'd got the USA one before they were available here - it was loads of £££. his 50th birthday pressie when i still had a job)
so my advice is - don't drop it and make sure it has some kind of protective case. Dh is far from clumsy...

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/11/2010 18:12

I agree, the browser is pretty awful, novelty wore off after about 30 seconds.

I only have the wifi one on the basis I never go anywhereGrin

Mine is a christmas pressie but I couldn't wait so have been using it for a couple of weeksBlush I bought the case with the light aswell which is lovely.

It is a fabulous thing, so great to read on and really easy to use, for an idiot like me I really love it.

MmeLindt · 24/11/2010 18:46

Doyouthink
What case do you have? I have a lightweight one but fancy one with light.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/11/2010 18:49

If you think you're only going to want to download books in places where you have a wifi connection then get the cheaper one. If you think you may be away from home for periods of time with no wifi in a bar, etc near you and want to download books away then get the more expensive one.

The browser is pants. Forget it and just think of it as an e-reader nothing else.

You can obviously read the books you've downloaded when you are somewhere without a connection. You don't need wifi or 3g to just read.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 25/11/2010 13:32

I have the leather one MmeLindt with light that costs an arm and a leg £50 on Amazon. It really is lovely and the light is great. You wouldn't even know the case had a light it's all built in and really small.
