Huge overseas 02 bill but using a different SIM???

My DD has a blackberry contract with 02. We bought the phone and have a 12 month sim only deal. When we went abroad in the summer she stupidly used her phone and ended up with a huge bill which we made her pay off.

A few weeks ago we went abroad again and she took her Blackberry but put an orange PAYG sim card (with a different number) in for the whole week so she could go out without us but we could still contact her.

The 02 sim card was taken out of her phone before we went and stayed in my purse until we arrived back in the UK.

We have just received a £54 phone bill from 02 and they claim the huge bill is down to internet access when we were abroad.

DD is adamant (and very upset as she has only just got her pocket money back)that she did not use her 02 sim while we were away and I actually thought it was in my purse for the whole week.

I phoned 02 and they said the bill was accurate and gave dates for when she had used the blackberry chat.

Is there any way she could not have used her o2 sim and still ended up with such a bill? Anyone else experienced this?

Did not like to see this go unanswered - sounds like a real headache. It's near impossible to get sensible info out of phone-companies on roaming-stuff.

I'm no expert and am ultra-cautious with my BB abroad, because it's so easy to mess up and get hammered with bills.

I think the problem is that the data-roaming service remains with 02, as they own the hand-set through the contract; regardless of an orange SIM being in it at the time.

The solution for this next time is to: leave it at home go to "Network connections" in the main menu. Then to, "Mobile Network Options". Change data services to "Off when roaming".
Then it becomes a bog-standard phone, but can latch onto free wi-fi where available. Apparently.

I'd be inclined to write a stern letter to 02 though. You might get something back, or at least some clearer advice without speaking to frustrating call-centre personages.

See here for more tips.
