Is it dfficult to put my DVDs onto my Ipod via Itunes

I was hoping to download a couple of DS's DVDs into Itunes and put them onto my Ipod touch so that DS can watch them on holiday.

I just assumed this was simple and could be done in a similar way to putting my CDs onto Itunes. Having given it a go and tried to google a solution I can see its far from simple- and a bit frustrating!!

I have found a few suggestions on the internet but i don't know which to choose.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

All suggestions gratefully received!!

Sorry. ... No tips from me obv!!

I feel a bit silly as I just assumed this would be simple, and could be easily done as with music. I guess music and DVDs are pretty different though now I think

Gah!!

DVDs are copy protected...

It's not impossible though, are you on Windows or a Mac?

hippohead · 02/11/2010 11:47

Oh I hadn't realised that.

I am using windows.

Download Handbrake (it's free). This will rip your dvds into iPod playable files. It's easy peasy, I've been using it for years (on a Mac but can't see any reason why it wouldn't be as simple on Windows)

I can't link to it as I'm at work but it's the first result on google.

hippohead · 02/11/2010 11:52

Oh thank you I will give that a go.

Copy protection won't stop you ripping for iPod, it's only if you're trying to copy the actual disc.

"Copy protection won't stop you ripping for iPod"

It can....

Handbrake does try to make quite clear that it doesn't crack copy protection. Apparently it does have trouble with some disks, Disney ones are meant to be particular examples.

Give Handbrake a go, if that doesn't work then there are ways to get it going.

Rocketbird · 02/11/2010 12:23

OK fair enough. I've had an iPod since 2001 and used Handbrake since 2001 and never ever come across a disc that won't rip. So if it happens it's fairly rare.

Am I breaching copywrite or something similar? I am only trying to copy for my own use.

Yes it is technically illegal...

The Record Companies have made statements in the past that they don't intend to pursue people ripping CDs for their own iPods. I'm not sure about the film companies.

As far as I know no one has ever got in trouble over copying for their own use.

Just don't pass it on to other people or let other people pass it on to you.
