When you say "keep tabs on a pc", what do you actually mean? What do you want to find out?

Could you not simply watch what they're doing on the computer?

BadgersPaws · 01/11/2010 10:21

If they're that savvy then virtually nothing is going to be undetectable and they'll find a way around it.

DanceInTheDark · 01/11/2010 12:28

What do you think they are doing?

Snorbs · 01/11/2010 12:44

Maybe a better approach would be "If I discover that you've disabled the tracking software on the PC you're banned from using it entirely."

AlisonDubois · 01/11/2010 22:14

I would just like to make sure they are safe and not doing anything that could put them in danger.
And I dont really want to have to sit and watch them while they use the pc....I have other children to look after too.

Network packet sniffer. That may be able to track what websites are accessed. You would get a lot of data to go through.

However it's not really a solution. If they can not be trusted to use the computer, then don't let them use it at all unsupervised.

Try putting all the computers together in the same location, which is in part of the house which is frequently visited by yourself - kitchen, lounge that sort of place.

Snorbs · 02/11/2010 00:01

So you want to let your children loose on a global network that is most definitely not child-safe, but you don't want to bother actually watching what they're up to?

Good luck with that.

MaMoTTaT · 02/11/2010 00:09

Snorbs - it only takes seconds for a child to search for something (and click on) something unsuitable.

If you have other children, or god forbid, need to use the toilet surely it's just nice to know that as WELL as having taught them the SMART rules they're not going on something inappropriate (or searching for something inappropriate) while your back is turned.

So your kids are disabling the software you're setting up and you're letting them get away with it?

Tell them that if they disable it or tamper with it again they'll be banned from using the computer for a week? month? until they're grown up and left home?

You have my sympathies AlisonDubois.
My 27yr old son was genuinely looking for illustrations of Ali Baba and The 40 thieves and kept getting some highly undesirable stuff. He wasnt too pleased.

Instead of spy software, make your account the only administrator. Then change your password to something they don't know.

Then make sure their accounts aren't administrators and they are limited.

And punish if required, as others have said.
