I have a problem with my laptop in that it will only connect to a wireless network when it is plugged into the mains.
If I unplug it from the mains it drops wifi connection every minute or so.
Other laptops can use my home wifi no problem.
I have the same problem with this laptop on any wireless network ie outside the house. So I can only really use it sitting by a plug socket, which slightly spoils the whole portable / wifi experience!

I put it in for repair, they changed the wireless card and checked it and said all was well, but I still have the same problem. It's under a year old so still under warranty; I could send it back again but I'm not feeling very confident that will fix things! Am wondering if there is some setting somewhere on my machine doing this?

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received, thanks Grin

Do you have battery management software on it? It may have a setting that switches the wireless off when it's running on battery, to conserve energy.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Smile

Well, that's what I wondered.

I'm running Windows 7. The only thing I can find that looks like it would affect it is through this route: Control panel - change power options - edit power saver options.

Then there is a submenu with wireless adapter settings where you can choose power saving or maximum performance for either plugged in or on battery. I've selected maximum performance for battery but it still does it.

I may have stumbled on a solution - previously I was manually changing the settings in the "power saving plan", thinking that I would still like the other power saving benefits, just not the wifi bit.

20 mins ago I switched to the Maximum Performance plan (this is beginning to sound like a cult Grin ) and so far I've stayed connected, unplugged. So perhaps even though I'd selected the settings in the power saving plan that should have overridden it, for some reason it wasn't.

Maybe I've cracked it! Of course, my battery will probably only last 15 minutes but for those 15 minutes I can Sit Wherever I Like!

Thanks again for your help Grin

Can you change the settings on your power saving plan so it never switches the wireless off?
