Which Ipod shall I get?

Not exactly rushing into the 21st century here, I am planning to get an ipod. This is going to be the music system for my house - not so worried about the car or about music on the move really. If it plays games for the DCs that would also be a plus.

I think I want the ipod classic. Is the touch really that much better? I'm not getting an iphone as I have a phone through work, and they don't support an iphone. I don't think my personal use of an i phone would justify the monthly fees.

Also I work not far from the Albion store. I was thinking about getting it there, rather than brand new, as I'll also need speakers. Any views?

An iPod Touch is almost an iPhone without the phone part. I think that they're great. You can download games and apps for them so DCs would be happy.

The downside of the Touch is that it has a relatively small storage space, the Classic is so much bigger.

But you can't get apps for the Classic. Well you used to be able to buy a few games for it but it was very hampered by only having the wheel and a few buttons and they never really caught on. I've got no idea if there's any still on sale or not...

The thing is you've not worried about being portable and need to get some decent speakers for an iPod then why not just get a stereo or even a cheap computer? You're paying a premium for the size and portability of the iPods.

After having an ipod for many years upgraded to a 64GB touch and very happy indeed. Yeah sure the storage is less than a classic but I have 6000 songs, pictures, video, apps etc and still isn't half full. There are lots of cool apps for kids and they have kept DD happily occupied for many a long train journey. If you have a mac; syncing with iphoto, mail, contacts is easy peasy and if you have wifi at home or frequent places that have free wifi the ease and convenience of surfing the web will mean that like me you'll be permanently tethered to the thing. Apple have just upgraded the touch and now it has a HD camera and now the only thing that differentiates it from the iphone is the phone.

Even If I could afford an iphone I would still would stick with the touch as I like my phone and portable media device separate and I have heard stories of the terrible network reception issues with the iphone.

I'd more than fill a 64GB touch, and that's with music alone and not considering all the other things that you mention such as apps and photos.

One thing that the extra space will let you do is to record the music in a much better quality. This is especially useful if you're planning on using it plugged into a decent set of speakers most of the time. When using "normal" headphones I defy most people to tell the difference.

The iPod Touch does now have a camera but it's HD by the skin of it's teeth and it's certainly nowhere as good as the camera in the any iPhone yet alone the new one. The iPod Touch's camera comes in at about 0.7 Mega Pixels. Compare that with 2 Mega Pixels for the first generation iPhone, 3 for the 3Gs and now 5 for the new iPhone.

Quite why they've made the camera worse than they put in a 3 year old iPhone is beyond me.

Internally the iPod Touch is also slightly less powerful than the new iPhone and aside from the phone bits it also lacks the GPS.

So don't think that with the new iPod Touch the only difference to the new iPhone is the phone. The Touch is noticeably, and curiously, less capable than the phone in a number of areas.

As said a Touch is "almost" an iPhone without the Phone, almost but not quite.
