Wants it for word processing & Internet. Up to £300 but lower the better!

What size screen would be best, and if a small screen, does DH have small fingers too, as some of the keyboards are far from ideal...

Personally I plug in USB keyboard and mouse when using any laptops, but then again, I power them from the mains (it would add to battery drain to use optical mouse and external keyboard on USB), but for me it means I can have an illuminated kbd for night use, with full size keys, no messing about like some laptops with three functions per key and no number pad.

Also that with a multimedia keyboard, it gives me sound mute, vol+, vol-, skip to next track, and so on. Sorry but I really, really, really, hate keyboards on most laptops, and whenever a client suggests buying a laptop I say to go into stores like Currys, Comet and PC World to try, and then look for any deals online when they know they will be OK with that keyboard.

Netbooks are smaller still, so even less chance of a number pad, lots of compromises about where the arrows go, and 2/3 uses per key, so even more reason to choose carefully.

If budget is tight I would completely ignore netbooks and get a s/h Windows XP mini tower on Ebay (at under 100 quid) and a decent size screen for 100-150 for a brand new 19" to 21" widescreen so movies and all could be used.

Sorry if a netbook is essential, but I feel some older bigger kit is better value (and add a wireless dongle for 5-10 quid off Ebay if you don't like cables to the router).

Space is tight so nohwere for a tower etc and the idea is we have my laptop for dvds/storage/anything fancy.

He does actually have small hands (and pretty much types with two fingers Hmm) but could have an proper keyboard to attach.

Ah, OK, space important.

How about this
Acer One at about 180 pounds.

The company details check (registration number on Companies House) so this isn't a fly-by-night firm. Might be worth searching the web for (ex-) customer comments to see if they are "OK" or "bad boys".

I only glanced at Google's shopping facility and searched for 'cheap netbooks' - there may be some other firms like Ebuyer / Dabs.com / Play.com / Scan.co.uk with bargain deals (to clear their stock) but for the money this looks OK and running XP, means it won't need the amount of extra RAM that Windows 7 would to run at the same speed.

It has 1 year warranty, generous (120 GB) HD, 1 GB RAM (more than nearly all my home PCs running XP!) and it isn't very expensive.

This one is 205 and has some favourable reviews from customers. Have not compared them 'side by side' for speed etc, but note it is also running XP.

NetworkGuy · 20/09/2010 11:41

Hmmm, cheaper one has bigger HD, and 1.6 MHz Atom, vs 630 MHz Celeron. Maybe someone with more hardware knowledge can compare those two CPUs and suggest which has more processing power.

I've seen some comments on the Atom being a low power (usage), low power (workload) CPU, but I think that for the money I would still go for the cheaper unit, and consider selling it in a year if upgrading to something better.

Thanks!

As a quick rule of thumb the Atom has about half the "power" of a "proper" processor of the same MHz.

The Celeron sits somewhere in between the Atom and a "proper" processor.

So I'd expect that the Atom given about would outperform the Celeron given above.

However you'd want to check the specs of the processor in detail to be sure.

The Atom is also a "proper" mobile processor so as well as probably offering better performance than the Celeron you should see things such as better battery life.

Thanks BP - I have seen the development of so many processors 'from the sidelines' and lost some enthusiasm for tracking what each and every new CPU does better or worse than others.

Had been aware Atom is aimed at mobile use, and how some detest the Celeron processors, but generally see the most 'fussy' users are gamers, who are also ready to overclock to get the most from their systems... and have, as I say, not been tracking every little nuance in the CPU world !

nymphadora - I would have mentioned this Elonex tablet (at 180 quid) but the downside is it is only Android v2.1 (v2.2 was announced in late Spring) and now, just checked, they have sold out anyway...

Might have been a nice idea...

nymphadora · 20/09/2010 14:24

Thanks both of you.

Sorry if too late, and you have already ordered / bought one but in Asda Living yesterday I saw they have HP/Compaq CQ10 101SA 10" netbook reduced to 197.00 (clearance price).

This is a wireless PC with Windows XP, Atom CPU, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, and a price low enough to consider for Christmas gifts in some families...
