I've lost the tool bar from the bottom of the pc screen. the one with the time, sound icon, explorer icon etc. How do I get it back. (ashamed at my lack of pc knowledge!)

go right to the bottom
right click
Choose Lock the taskbar

I think
Let me know if that works

I'd back up SPB's idea, but be warned it can 'autohide' on any edge of the screen - if not locked you can drag the taskbar to be up left side, across top, or down right side.

Once it is visible, be sure to turn off 'autohide' (sorry, typing this on a linux box so from memory you need to right-click 'Start' and may see 'auto hide' as an option somewhere there).

Still can't find it.

Oh dear. Right, back to first principles... Let's first check you ar familiar with adjusting the size of a window (getting the cursor to change to arrows, usually a pair vertically up/down, or horizontal left/right, or if you move to a corner of a window, diagonal.

If you're happy with adjusting a window's size, then you're ready to play 'hunt the toolbar'...

It is possible to adjust the height/width of the bar (width if it is down one size of the desktop), and it is not impossible to make it so thin as to be zero pixels across.

So, your task today, brightwell, should you chose to accept it, is to move your mouse to the lower edge of your desktop, and see if your cursor changes to vertical arrows... If it does, click and move the cursor up, to return the toolbar to its normal thickness (height). Fingers crossed for you. Good luck. This tape will self-destruct in 5 seconds . . . . .

Fingers crossed the toolbar was at the bottom of the screen before it went into hiding, else you'll need to try along the other edges too.

I chose to accept! Cursor didn't change to arrows.....BUT.....the toolbar is back, from where...who knows. Thank you.

Windows XP? Windows XP was very sloppy with it's task bar handling and I find that if "often" disappears or doesn't hide as it should. Later versions of Windows got better but it's always been a bit fiddly.

Aside from NetworkGuy's suggestions I sometimes find that pressing the windows key does the trick or pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and seeing if any process, particularly explorer, is listed as not responding and killing it.
