Looking for advice about whether to get iphone 3gs or iphone4 as just get completely befuddled while trying to research. Iphone 4 seems to cost a lot more but is there a good reason for that, or is it just having the latest thing?!
Either would be a huge improvement on my old PAYG Sony Ericsson which I can only hear faintly when put on loudspeaker! Only just realised how trashed it is when I borrowed my DH's similar one.

Honestly, if you're coming from an older phone, then the 3Gs will be just great. I've had every model of iPhone but I'm a real iPhone geek. The iP4 does have significant improvements over the 3Gs but not enough to make a difference to a new iPhone user IYSWIM.

But in a years time when I am truly converted will I be wishing I had?

iPhones typically work in 2 year cycles. So this July there's been a major upgrade, next July there's likely to be only a minor upgrade (storage space or colour etc). If you do wish you'd gone for the iP4 then there are always options. iPhones will always fetch a good price on ebay if they are looked after. It depends on whether you want to spend the extra money up front really. :)

I've upgraded every year because when I'm still in contract I buy a sim free one, it's my big little treat to myself.

Thanks Rockbird.
Are there any major disadvantages with the 3GS?

None that I can see. I swapped from a 3Gs and have noticed no great difference between the two. I upgraded because I'm a geek, I was hugely happy with the 3Gs.

The 4 has a front facing camera which is nice but not essential. It enables you to use Facetime, which is video calling but I don't know anyone else with a 4 well enough to call so I haven't used it yet and probably won't for months. There is an app which I love called Incredibooth which is a 70s photo booth. It uses the front camera and is great fun but not a deal breaker.

The main camera is a 5MP which is a bit better but it's still a phone camera.

Speed is comparable and more dependant on network than anything. I changed from o2 who were great to Vodafone who are rubbish Hmm

The feel of the 4 is different, it's flat as opposed to the rounded back of the 3Gs. Most people I've talked to prefer the curved back and say the 4 is a little uncomfortable to hold.

Most features on the 4 are available on the 3Gs because they're software related so you wouldn't be missing out on very much. Don't get me wrong, if you have the funds/inclination then get the 4, it's an amazing phone. But the 3Gs is a damn fine phone as well and if Apple had decided to skip a year and left us with the 3Gs I'd still be doing cartwheels of contentment!

I need help here too!! Don't have time to set out my story right now, but please can I come back later for some help?!?!?!

Cheers.

Nyx · 13/09/2010 09:56

Don't know if it helps you as I've not had a 4, but I have the 3Gs and I loooooove it. Normally I'm the first to upgrade whenever possible but I'm not even considering it at the moment. I don't think you will find any drawbacks to the 3Gs at all.

If loads of folk come on to plug the 4, I will be watching with interest too!

Nyx · 13/09/2010 09:57

I've had the 3Gs for over a year btw.

undertheboredwalk · 13/09/2010 10:02

I have the 4, upgraded as soon as it came out, but am iPhone geek too, and agree with everything Rockbird has said. If you're coming from an old phone the 3Gs will be just fine, the differences between the two are not that massive.
I love my 4 and am glad I upgraded, but I was due renewal and it cost me v little. I wouldn't have done if I'd had to pay the price it's costing others!

MisterW · 13/09/2010 11:47

Neither of them. Get an Android phone. They're sooooo much better Grin

Rockbird · 13/09/2010 16:57

Ignore MisterW, he is clearly on the wrong thread :o

Have I missed the boat to pick your iPhone brains?!
Currently on a bog standard phone contract with Vodafone. £10 a month, I hate the phone, it doesn't work properly (already been replaced once) and I just want shot. Have 6 months left on contract.

Can I (legally):
a) buy Iphone handset and put existing SIM in handset, will it work? I only have texts and calls at the moment, so could I get email/internet with iPhone?

b) Take out a completely new contract (DH could do this as a "new" customer - he doesn't have a personal mobile) for an iPhone and transfer my mobile number to it, even though existing contract still running (Happy to just pay £10 a month to Vodafone until end of the contract).

Is "3G" the same as IPhone 3? Sorry, I am utterly ignorant, time to join the modern era.

BadgersPaws · 14/09/2010 12:13

"buy Iphone handset and put existing SIM in handset, will it work? I only have texts and calls at the moment, so could I get email/internet with iPhone?"

Does your existing contract have internet access? And if so check out how much you pay for it.

"Is "3G" the same as IPhone 3?"

3G is a type of mobile phone network that supports reasonably fast internet access.

The iPhone 3G was the first iPhone to support this, I don't think it's available anymore.

The iPhone 3GS was an enhanced version of the iPhone 3G. It was faster, more powerful, had a better camera and some models had more storage space.

Does that help?

MisterW · 14/09/2010 14:56

Sorry, I saw a flock of sheep heading the wrong way and thought they needed redirecting to the correct path Grin

allluckedout · 14/09/2010 15:00

lol at MisterW
i have had both now and i would say the 3Gs is just as good for a regualr phone user. i have used none of the features that the 4 offers in addition to the 3gs. the new 3gs come with updated software anyway so apart from camera and video function there really is no difference.
the shape is slightly different but mine is in a case so you don;t notice.
oh and i would say i prefer my blackberry to my iphone anyway Wink (iphone is work phone and blackberry is my personal phone)

BadgersPaws · 14/09/2010 15:13

"lol at MisterW"

Mmmm pointless hatred of one type of gadget or provider is something that I never really got.

"the new 3gs come with updated software anyway so apart from camera and video function there really is no difference."

There are more differences to the 4, real differences in the hardware that can't be fixed by the software.

The 4 is more more powerful, has a much improved display, better motion detectors and supports more communication methods.

Howver are those important?

I'm really not sure.

One day people will write apps that need the better screen or the new motion sensors, but that's not now, and I'm not sure when it will be.

PrettyVacant1 · 17/09/2010 20:11

Get a HTC Desire.
Tis better tham an iPhone and you can control whats on it and not Steve Jobby

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/09/2010 21:52
