Thinking of getting kindles for children aged 11 and 13 for Xmas. They are both avid readers. Does anyone have a 3rd generation kindle and are they any good?

Mike: I just got mine today and absolutely love it - my daughter is 13 and hasn't shown much interest in it though.

We have been thinking of getting a family Kindle but putting kids stuff on it too. What puts me off is paying for all the books all over again and they are not cheap either.

Do you have to pay for them again? I've just downloaded the Kindle app on my iPad and bought two books. Then I downloaded the app for my laptop & iphone too and each time the books were there in the archive & I downloaded them again -it didn't say I would be charged again, and as far as I can see looking at my account, I haven't been.

We bought the Sony 600 book reader for my 11 year old DD when she passed her 11+. It's a bit smaller than the kindle and the screen resolution is amazing. She loves it.

She has bought a few up to date novels but to be honest they are not alot cheaper than the real thing. However there are 100s of free fiction.

You don't have to pay several times. You can download onto several devices. I use kindle iPhone and iPad.

My 8yo loves my kindle. Great for popping in your bag when you go out for a meal. Or for holidays as you never run out of books.

Good, that's what I thought, I was just wondering if I was going to get an unexpected bill!

Maybe ilanak meant buying them again having already got print copies.

Yes, I did mean having to replace the print books with the ebooks. We have an extensive library of childrens books and my ds1 (an avid reader) likes to read them again and again.

I ordered one of the new itouch today and plan to use the book reader function on that instead of a kindle. But it kills me to have to pay out for books again. And the main ones that ds1 and I would both like are not available as ebooks - Harry POtter.

I have an iPad and love reading digitally. I'm not buying that "oh but it can't replace books" line. However I'm not generous enough to buy my children one each.

I notice with release of 3rd generation kindle amazon has dropped prices on kindle books . I feel this Xmas ebook sales will soar or start to rise. Kobo and I books still quite expensive relative to print price. I'm mostly interested in how easy to use a kindle is. Don't know why as they are more computer intuitive than me.

I'm a great fan of digital reading too, but it won't replace books till there's a reader that will survive being dropped in the bath....
