emails being read - can't detect a keylogger but suspect one

I found out the other day that my emails were being accessed without my knowledge. Since then i have suspected a relative has put a keylog programme on my laptop. i have a thread in chat that you may have seen.

AVG hasn't found any issues which is good in a way.

I have changed passwords using laptop and then changed some of them again on my phone.

I am also about to email "them" to my account from a different account.

I can't bring this up with them until after the BH for a number of reasons.

so - how can i tell if my gmail is being accessed by someone else?

How can i tell if a keylog is being used, if at all?

I am using laptop now so obviously i can't say too much. I have been accessing email today using onscreen keyboard - hopefully that will be secure enough!

Some tipshere

how can i tell if my gmail is being accessed by someone else?

In the web interface you can list the access history. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and see where it says
Last account activity: 1 minute ago at this IP and click where it says Details
May list some things, though if you are accessing using multiple devices (such as laptop, phone) then you need to work out which of the entries on the list are you. Not sure how far it goes back in time... not far... possibly less than 24-hours.

where can i find the web interface?

I am not computer illiterate but not anywhere near a genius!

The tips on that link are good. Bit worried about doing anything that involves turning off system restore tho Confused

ok i'm confused.

I have things i don't really recognise.

IMAP - is that email retrieval from a different address? and would those emails go into my inbox?

I have 2 different IP addresses for the IMAP entries yet minutes apart....

IMAP some numbers then 238.44 13:29 (2 hours ago)
IMAP some numbers then 249.51 13:26 (2 hours ago)

Can IMAP access at any time? I am pretty sure i was still asleep at 6:08 this morning!

My mobile phone IP address is consistant and i have accessed my mail at those times.

IMAP is when you are using an email program to retrieve your emails, rather than going to gmail.com and reading them there. Accessing emails via IMAP means they remain on the server.

If you only access your email online as above youc an turn off IMAP access in your settings.

Not sure about the IP addresses - sorry..

FlutterbyPurpleToffee · 28/08/2010 16:07

FOR NOW I HAVE CLICKED TO DEACTIVATE BOTH IMAP AND POP. (sorry i hit caps - not shouting!)

My emails get sent to my blackberry ordinarily - would that use IMAP?

i googled the 2 IMAP IP addresses and they are both Research In Motion (RIM) which is blackberry. Would that be being accessed by 2 blackberries if they are listed minutes apart?

I Am changing my email address while at a friends in a few days in case you were wondering Wink

SOrry for mither.

Blackberry would be accessing via IMAP most likely. It will be checking automatically at a set period of time, frequency of which may change depending on the time of day.

Would that be being accessed by 2 blackberries if they are listed minutes apart?
Don't know. May just be how the blackberry system checks mail.

By deactivating IMAP you should be able to restrict access such that it's all via the web interface (so using your web browser).

FlutterbyPurpleToffee · 28/08/2010 16:26

thats what i have done. I can see when i have accessed it using Opera on my phone (ie the long way!) as those times tally and the IP addresses are all the same.
