HTC-battery life SO BAD!!! May have to take back

OK, so got a HTC desire yesterday.

Sales lady persuaded me as I'm not keen on touch screen phones and had heard battery life was poor. Like the lemming I am, I let her persuade me as I also fell in lust with it as soon as I saw it.

Charged it fully overnight. As of 10 minutes ago, it's saying I need to plug in charger. I have fiddled a bit with the internet and sent a few texts and a couple of e-mails but 9 and HALF HOURS on a full overnight charge??? I can't be charging it all the time....

Also, anyone else have a problem with the buttons (on screen obv) being really small. I keep hitting the one next to the one I want and having to delete. It's taking me AGES to type messages-it's driving me nuts!

The lady in the shop said I have a week's cooldown period. I've never been offered this before. I'm wondering whether they've had a lot of people bringing them back. I can't see the point of having a phone with all this amazing technology if the battery is a lot of rubbish and you have to charge it twice a day.

Anyone else have one? What do you think?

Thank you! Does anyone have recommendations for apps?

SummerRain · 22/08/2010 15:46

Most phones now have batteries that improve the more you charge them. I got a Sony Erricson Xperia Mini last month and the first few days it was running out of power by early evening after a full overnight charge. Now it does two days easily unless i'm really going mad with the internet or camera.

prettymum · 22/08/2010 15:50

have you turned off GPS and haptic feedback in setting> sound as with that turned on it drains battery a lot too.

prettymum · 22/08/2010 15:54

here's one of the forums i visit for my htc hero and have learnt a lot about it, you might learn more about your desire here

android forum

Claire2301 · 22/08/2010 16:32

Thank you! Will head over there :-)

onmyhols · 22/08/2010 20:25

Thanks prettymum. Shock horror, after all my ranting and raving, I am considering keeping the desire!

I'll have to make a decision tonight. Will have a look on the android forum. OMG, I'm turning into a geekGrin!

There's an app called 'Advanced Task Killer' its free on the Android market and 'kills' everything which is running on your phone but you arent using.

What you dont realise is that there are usually a few applications running in the background which drain your battery. For example, if you have been into your messages, and email, and internet - they will all still be running.

The task killer just shows as an icon on your menu but when you press it, it will show you what is currently running on your phone - you can then 'kill' these.

I have the Desire and the app above and find the battery life is ok. Albeit not as good as the Blackberry I have for work - the battery on that lasts for days!

zippy539 · 22/08/2010 20:34

I know it's a different phone but my iphone battery life has been driving me mad - literally needing charged after 7 hours of normal use Hmm.

Then yesterday I was messing about with the settings and set 'auto-lock' to 2 minutes (before I had it on 'never'). Tada!!! It's still more than 50% charged after being on for 24 hours.

I always thought auto-lock was a security thing but I think it's actually a sleep mode - have you got something similiar. If so try it - I was on the point of taking the phone back too. :)

onmyhols · 22/08/2010 21:31

I'm back from the android forum-phew, that is hardcore! Did't know what they were talking about half the time but there are a lot of good hints and tips.

Hi Zippy. Must admit I had it set on 2 mins anyway as I'm always worried if I sling it into my bag that it will dial if it's not locked.

It's a really interesting point though, I'll bet it's something that a lot of people wouldn't even consider...

Glad that website helped, here's another i'm always on (i'm a htc geek and love my htc hero)

xda forum

Once you get the hang of everything you will love it, there's so much you can do with the phone, after 9 months with my hero I still havent got bored of it! I would love to have a desire but still got some time left on my contract. Good luck!

SamJones · 23/08/2010 22:21

I have the Desire and I know what you mean about the battery life but I'm willing to live with that because I love it so much!

Another thing you can do to help is to turn off the synch for anything you don't really use much, or don't mind refreshing manually. If you have Facebook/Twitter/Weather/stocks apps running in the background it checks for updates all the time which is a drain.

Also - only have the GPS on when you need it as this is a big drain.

notanidea · 23/08/2010 22:36

I know it is totally a different question - do you have a docking system like which you have for ipod to listen to music in HTC desire. How do you download any music from the internet to your phone.

SamJones · 23/08/2010 22:45

Not sure about the docking thing - though anything is possible.

As for downloading music - just download onto your computer - I use Amazon quite a lot as it is often cheaper than itunes, then from the music folder just drag and drop the files into the phone music file (when it is connected to the pc obviously).

www.appbrain.com for apps

www.fank.ru for ringtones. For this you have to use your normal browser or opera mini.

Scroll down for English language.
and if you are wanting full tracks, click mp3 songs then English and off you go.

Been using that site a fair few years now and never had a problem with it.

onmyhols · 24/08/2010 20:52

well today I took my mobile out of my bag and the screen was crackedSad.

If I have the option, I will be changing it for something else. It just feels too delicate, I'm scared to take it anywhere!

I still can't text properly or very fast, it's too easy to press other buttons inadvertantly and the screen keeps changing to something else on its own. Feel as if I've given it a good go but am fed up with it.

hang...have a link for something which is a must for one of these phones!

bruffin · 24/08/2010 21:35

I got the HTC wildfire at the weekend, which is supposed to be very similar to the desire. You can calibrate the keyboard to your typing style.
Also you can get an app from market place called Task Killer which is supposed to improve battery time.

bruffin · 24/08/2010 21:42

on mine the keyboard calibration tool is in settings

Keyboard/touch input/text input/calibration tool.

MimsyStarr · 24/08/2010 21:53

I thought that about the battery too, but it gets better after a week.

Have you read the Android Forums forum for the HTC Desire? I learnt a lot there. Read the stickys first.

MimsyStarr · 24/08/2010 22:10

And I should read the whole thread before I post so that I don't repeat what prettymum had already said!

onmyhols · 24/08/2010 22:34

Thanks for the replies.

I was thinking of getting a protection shield before the screen cracked today which was the last straw.

I,ve calibrated the keypad. It's a bit better and also downloaded a "swype" app but I'm still texting really slowly compared to normal buttons/my old phone. I've also got the task killer app.

Have been on the forums and they are quite helpful but I just can't be bothered working my way through all the info-I just want a mobile that does what I want straight away.

Other things that are annoying are not being able to see the screen in daylight, the screen being constantly covered in fingerprints and orientation not always working when I rotate the phone.

Have done a bit of research and the Samsung Wave is looking promising.....
