Need help with a professional sound system

Dh is a dance teacher
He has a radio mike
It needs to feed through an amp

The system he has is a bit old & we need to replace the CD player

Ideally we need a CD player that can take a memeory stick, has pitch control (I think it's called) that we can feed the mike through

Any ideas of what we need so I don't look too much of a pratt at the music shop?

DP who works in the music industry says get yourself

A 2nd hand Pioneer CDJ (or equivalent) would do the job. It'll have pitch control and you could put a card into it. You can get them fairly cheap.

You would also need a mixer to put the CD and mike through, before it goes to the amp (do you have one already maybe?)

KatyMac · 15/08/2010 13:30

No

Umm

I thought we could just feed the mike through the CD player (like a ghetto blaster type thing)

I guess I am out of touch

Does that even exist? A portable CD player with variable pitch control that you can feed a radio mike through?

Sorry, we went out for the day.
I'll ask DH again, back later.

Thanks - I guess I know I'm going to have to go & be humiliated at the shop.....I'm just a wuss

OK, lets start again. I think we've gone off at a tangent! "Pitch control" is to do with mixing (e.g. mixing CDs or records) and speeds the music up or slows it down. If you want this, then go with our earlier suggestion. But now I read your OP again, I think perhaps that's a red herring? Do you actually mean you need to be able to turn the volume up and down on the mike? If so, you simply need something with a fader, or volume control for the mike,

"I thought we could just feed the mike through the CD player (like a ghetto blaster type thing)" I won't repeat DP's response work for word (too many swear words Grin) but the gist is that this is a bad idea because the sound will be awful, you won't be able to adjust the volume on the mike so the level of music and voice will probably be awful.

What you need is a basic 4 channel mixer. (4 channels gives you more options if you want to plug anything else into it in the future)

Here's a very, very basic one from Maplins for just £25.
Or if you want a more knobs one you could pick up a second hand one for about the same price but a bit fancier.

You also need a CD player which can take a memory stick.

You plug the mike and the CD player into the mixer, and then plug the mixer into the amp.

The mixer will have a volume control if it's basic (like the one above) or if it's a little more fancy, it'll have a fader (I think this is what you were thinking of when you said pitch control?) so you can adjust the volume of the mike and the CD players, to get the right mix of volumes.

Here's an example of a mixer with a fader.

Here's another one

It will also have basic EQs so you can fiddle with bass / mids / highs. This will be useful for your DH if you goes into a room and finds he has terrible feedback - he can the EQs on the mixer to sort out any terrible feedback noises.

I guess we are

Currently we have a system with:

a CD player with pitch control to slow down the speed of tracks so we can teach faster dances more slowly

this plugs in to a vertical speaker thingie which plugs into 2 small speakers - all needing packing into a metal case each time we use it

We also have a radio mike which plugs into a box - with 2 aerials (this is where it gets fuzzy) then in to something else to make it work - this all gets packed into a cardboard box

Ideally we wanted something that doesn't need too much packing away because it is a nightmare with little bits of foam & loads of cables

BTW - sorry for late reply I was out dancing

& Thank you for being so patient

I have seen dance teachers use portable integrated solutions like this, with CD and radio mike modules which is probably easier than separate/rack mounted CD/mixer/amp/speakers, although not cheap.

mranchovy · 17/08/2010 01:08

Here's a bigger selection - not all the CDs have pitch control so check this as it is obviously important - check the range is wide enough for you too as I think they vary.

KatyMac · 17/08/2010 07:56

I think that is the sort of thing we were thinking about

At least I won't faint in the shop when they say the price

He really does need something simpler as we will only have about 10 minutes to set up/close down

I'll have a good look

Oh god there are so many & they all talk gobbledegook

OP posts:
KatyMac · 17/08/2010 21:07

I don't think this one has pitch control

OP posts:
KatyMac · 17/08/2010 21:24

might this work

The first one doesn't even have a CD player to have pitch control on!

The Portogram one is clearly a product made for the purpose, that's what you need.

Funnily enough, looking on their site I see this one which is clearly a modified Sony boombox the original version of which I bought on Saturday for my DS's birthday! It gives a pretty good sound so if you don't need the mic input and wanted something cheaper this could work.

None of their systems seems to have an integrated radio mike receiver though, which given the application is a bit of a surprise and still leaves you with a separate bit of kit to unpack and set up.

Is their some magazine (Dance Teacher Monthly???, Aerobics Gazette???) that carries adverts for suppliers of this sort of thing?

KatyMac · 18/08/2010 22:17

You would think they would have.....but I haven't found it

MN is my best bet (for most things) Grin
