I seem to have inserted all the cables correctly, any thoughts on what could be wrong?

Have you inserted the batteries correctly?

Is it a corded or cordless phone? If you got it from an online store, can you link to the product page?

Do you have anything else plugged into the phone socket? If so, remove everything and start with just the phone. If it works, then try putting the other things back again and seeing if the phone still works.

Do you know if the socket works? Is there another phone you can plug into it to test it with?

ok, dh brought home a phone from work, just to double check that the line is working, and it is.

He unplugged our broadband filter thingy and plugged the phone directly into the phone socket, and it worked (I had tried this but didn't work for me).
So, does anyone know any reason why a phone would not work through the ADSL filter that always has worked (with our previous phone)

this is the phone

About the only difference plugging new phone in to filter vs old phone in filter, and new phone into the socket filter is plugged into, is the quality of the connection between plug on new phone and socket in the filter.

Many sockets have four parallel strips of copper or some alloy. Depending on how tight a fit, and how long the old phone has been plugged in, those might have become a bit less 'springy' so might make poor contact.

Alternatively, could there have been any moisture or oxidation affecting those strips ?

Not sure of an easy way to 'clean' them but perhaps pushing a really fine screwdriver with the blade flat against a strip (to force off any dust/ greasy /oxidation deposits) might make the contact better. Also check the shininess of the plug - should be nice and clean copper, but if it was in a container and was dampened by sea water, there's a 0.0001% chance the contacts have suffered oxidation, with green or white surface...

Hope that helps. Alternatively, look at Solwise (.co.uk) and for a fiver or so, get a new filter (always handy to have a spare) and see if that works better. Good luck.

thanks networkguy.
The previous phone had been plugged in for 10 months, and the filters were new around the same time, as we got them when we changed broadband/phone supplier.

Will take a look at the contacts, but I'd be very surprised if there was a problem with them tbh.

a wee bump

Any reason why a new phone wouldn't work with existing ADSL adapter but an old corded phone would (and the previous cordless phone less than a year old)?
