GARMIN NUVI maps

I bought a nuvi 250 about 2 years ago and am just wondering if I should update the maps for uk & europe?

Any thoughts, has anyone downloaded from the GARMIN site? There seems to be a big difference in prices and I can only seem to get update maps for Italy & Greece, not Western Europe as a whole. I primarily need Italy but the UK and France would be useful too.

I do wonder whether I may as well just buy a new one as there doesn't seem to much difference in the price?

help please

hi there, same as you and think I should get a new one as I'm in London and the streets seem to change a bit eg one ways now go the other way!

BUT I tried a download to update, the file was massive and crashed my computer twice. when I say crash it had a big meltdown and had to put the system back to where it had been a while back so I lost other stuff plus it took ages, white screen up for a long time and both times I thought that I had totally lost the computer memory.

also I am pretty sure that the download took me over my broadband limit, so that got put up into the next bracket and I have to pay more per month until usage drops.

if you think it is worth it buy a CD or (as I did for a holiday in Italy) a memory card.

or yes, get a new sat nav - though think I would not go with Garmin next time unless they've improved useability.

just seen a nuvi 250 pre-loaded with 2010 maps for £75. At that price it hardly seems worth downloading. I've found mine ok on the whole though nothing to compare it too. It has taken me down one or two tricky roads in Italy I can tell you but i'm getting wise to it . Oh i dunno, maybe I shan't bother. Am about to drive almost 1000 miles across France & Italy and will be living in Italy. I will be on the main autostrada for the most part and will maybe just have to reply on good ole signposts instead .

Thanks for the info

ooh where did you see the £75 one please? regardless of ishoos with the gadget, I cannot live without my sat nav. would be late for everything if I had to go back to maps.

it's 2010 maps for uk & ireland and 2009 for rest of Europe. Mine is at least 2007 and I know there have been major changes since then.

I'm just as we speak putting American maps on my Garmin, for which I need to buy a new memory card. TBH if I'd realised what was involved I would have just bought one when I got there- if the maps were cheaper maybe, but they aren't, and downloading 1.28GB is quite an undertaking. But their software is good and if you're just updating what you already have it's worth doing, I reckon.

DelGirl · 04/08/2010 14:49

gosh that's a mixed answer if ever I read one lol . Still no wiser . Thanks for the input though.

I have ordered the usb adaptor for all of 85p from Amazon. Then i'll see what happens on the site I think.

It is a bit isn't it? Well what I'm saying is that I was offered the normal update, but thought "No, I'll conquer the world and put the US maps on as well", and not only was this more expensive but it was more complicated and I might as well have spent the same amount of money in dollars buying another Garmin when we get there. But the normal update would have been a good idea.

One thing I am quite adamant about these days is that a holiday without Sat-Nav is no holiday at all.

DelGirl · 04/08/2010 15:00

Oh ok, the garmin site isn't very clear then as I thought you could only update when you first purchase the satnav, not further down the line. I assumed I would have to buy a whole new map or am I just being dim . Will take another look. Thanks

You can say that again! Another thing is that you need your serial number to register the damn thing, and mine had been scratched off. But if you have that, you can register and update any time.

prism · 04/08/2010 15:30

I have now done the USA map update. My advice to anyone who has the option, to buy a TomTom!

DelGirl · 04/08/2010 17:08

gee thanks! lol

My recollection is that the free update is limited to 2 months after first use of the Satnav. I would guess that the Satnav logs this information and their update software can check this.

DelGirl · 05/08/2010 19:51

I know you have only 60 days from purchase for a free update but you can pay £50 for a one-off update or £100 for lifetime updates of up to 4 x a year. Providing the sat nav still works and not discontinued . I think I will do some more googling. Tempted by the lifetime updates though it's pricy.
