My potatoes are flowering. Does this mean they are ready to pull up?

I planted some sprouting potatoes in March and the plants are about 1ft out of the ground now. They've been earthed up too.

Now the plants are flowering (little purple flowers) does that meant I need to harvest them?

I was hoping they could stay in the ground until Autumn so we had some nice big potatoes, but they won't be that big now will they?

oh - my dad said they were looking leggy last night. They do look a bit shabby now. Worried they won't last well until september though. Oh well - will wait and see.

Just realised that I've planted my 7 butternut squash in the ground where DH sprayed weed killer about a month ago. That's those written off then!

check which weed killer - many don't stay in the soil - they kill the ones growing there at the time.

It was pathclear so if it was in the same area (DH can't remember exactly), then are they not safe to eat.......if they actually grow at all?

Oh, yes, my toms get blight almost every year, either that or blossom end rot. It's because I live on the west coast of Scotland and have very heavy soil. Quite potato friendly but not tomato friendly, I'm afraid. To cold and wet. The toms are doing well this year, though, all 12 plants are in flower already, which is really unusual. It's this freakish weather.

Don't pull them up yet..
Make sure they are watered and soil around them is freshly dug up ...
They'll need another month or so to be ready..

Have you tried buying a bag of compost, or topsoil, or miracle grow soil, i live in shores and its all sand i buy all three and mix them in woth the sand, my garden is doing great
