Raised border question

We're making a raised border with some sleepers and I have 2 questions;

  1. Do I need to lift the turf or will it die with the foot of soil that goes on top? If it wont, what lazy easy way is there to kill it off.

  2. The bed has been placed around two climbing plants. Do I need to dig them up and replant once the soil goes in or can I just put the soil around them going up to about a foot of the plant's stem?

TIA

  1. No I would bother lifting the turf, it will die off.

  2. Depends what the climbers are - if they are clematis then they'll be fine - it protects them against wilt.

The climbers are a jasmine and a grape

Mmm not an expert on grapes but I would think that it is unlikely to like being buried. The jasmine might be better - it can be propagated by air laying so will probaly layer itself into the new soil. You could always take a hardwood cutting as an insurance policy if the plant cops it.

That all sounds complicated . Perhaps I ought to just dig it up and replant it. I imagine that its not the best time of year to be doing such a thing though.

G'wan have a go If not just keep it watered religiously and it should be fine.

OK, ok I'll need to read how to do it properly though. Thanks for the advice.
