Have just cut down a big tree and it was quite easy!

I just wanted to share, in case anyone else is thinking about it... have got plans to build a proper walk in chicken run, but this elder tree was in the way and I thought I'd have to get the landlord round to cut it with his chain saw, which would have meant waiting ages...

however yesterday I decided to have a go with the woodsaw, and surprisingly, it went through really, really easily. I don't know if it is just elder that is so juicy, but anyway we are talking about an 8 or 9 inch trunk.

The hardest part was making it fall somewhere without getting hurt, as the bottom bit kicks out when the top goes over iyswim.

Was quite lucky in this respect as it could have been a bit dangerous.
The tree had two large trunks both of which I had to cut, and was about 7 or 8 metres high.

I feel quite manful now though I did wear a skirt to do it as I didn't actually think I would get anywhere, so didn't bother to change. and we did have permission, so that was OK.

I now have to get rid of the logs and all the leafy branches, which is the difficult bit!

But at least can get on with building enclosure, now. Huzzah.

I wish ! We've got an ash which was cut down but would like to remove the remaining stump. Thought we could just dig around and cut off main roots but if only it were that easy ! Blooming thing won't budge and keep unearthing subsidiary roots which overlap. Any tips ?

I think you need to poison it.

Have you got a saw of some sort? Cut across the stump top, in a grid, as deep as you feel able to, and drill some deep holes into it and fill them with salt.

This ought to kill off the stump and the roots will die, too - once dead it won't sprout any more and will be far easier to dig out.

I'm sorry I don't have a faster solution!

Where are you Fliight? I have a voracious woodburning stove which would gladly accept some more logs for the winter!

Well done, BTW! I always feel all 'I am woman, see me saw!' when I've been sawing wood for the fire.

LOL I want a proper axe now.

We're in Kent but our landlord always wants the logs, if we cut anything - sorry, I'll have to offer him first.

If he is out of the country then you are welcome to them though as I have no room!
