Subject says it all really.

Tried several different varieties -

tumbling toms,
money makers
others that I cant remember

following the advice on the labels when buying them

now they are going black and crispy

grrrrr they are young plants, what on earth am I doing wrong?

Part of me thinks should chuck all the plants I have, and buy some new ones

How much are you watering them?
Are they getting sunlight?

Maybe you are overwatering them.

Black and crispy = not good. Buy new ones.

I do like to make sure they are properly watered...

What size of pot do you have? Tomato plants need plenty of space.
What do you mean by 'properly watered'? It does sound as if they are getting too much water.
Are they being fried on a windowsill? How do you get them crispy? Is something attacking them?

Try growing them in an aerogarden and they will get the correct water, nutrients and light. You can also grow them all year round.

Where are they? Indoors/outdoors?

OnlyWantsOne · 27/04/2010 07:43

thats not really my style of gardening

Perhaps I am over watering them.... if they are covered up, in a cloche and stuff, and the frost doesnt get to them - they will be ok wont they?

backs off with the watering

Are they outside?
They may have had a touch of frost. Keep them inside on a sunny windowsill until the early morning frosts have passed.

OnlyWantsOne · 27/04/2010 07:47

they are out side, but in a cloche

Are they in pots or in the ground?

ProfYaffle · 27/04/2010 07:56

have a look could it be some sort of blight?

OnlyWantsOne · 27/04/2010 09:08

yes they are in pots - varying sizes, some are only small and recently bought and according to Gardeners Worlds - I have left them in the 9cm pots till they flower, then pot them up into grow bags

Others are in large pots

arrr just looked at the photos - it looks exaclty like early blight

oh FFS

Its a bit cold for tomatoes outdoors even in a cloche, unless you are in the Southern Med. It sounds like frostbite!

If I were you, I'd chuck the crispy ones, get some new ones, keep them indoors on a sunny windowsill and then plant them outside at the end of May.
