It needs to go on the north facing fence at the bottom of the garden, there is alot of light in the area but not direct sun after 10am.
the soil is going to be improved with horse muck and top soil but is currently very dry and stoney.

am I flogging a dead horse??

David Austin roses This page can help you choose the correct rose for this area.

The Generous Gardner is the one I would choose. It would do very well in the area you have described and is absolutely beautiful. One tip is to grow some garlic around the base - it increases the scent and vigour plus keeps disease at bay.

Honeysuckle would also do well as it is pretty hardy or passion flower. (Or clematis)

I'd say New Dawn would work well - I had it recommended for a similar situation, and it did indeed grow well and flowered reliably, although to be honest, I do find it a dull colour.

Also have a 'New Dawn'in a similar place and also grows very well (and having posted this I now think I have turned into my mother)
