I've just planted lettuce, sunflowers, herbs etc outside in pots but I am now worried about slugs.
How can I repel them in a way that won't harm my two year old dd?

Beer in sunk yogurt pots around the periphery of the bed .
Wood chips and bark or gravel as a surrounding border strip -- slugs really don't like fine gravel.

Apparently Nemaslug is very good.

I'd go with beer in saucers too.

copper strips that you wrap round the pot rim are good, and although cost a bit, there's no upkeep or replacement costs

There's also a soluble slug killer that you can water onto plants - although best not used for crops.

The most friendly is either

Garlic slug Barrier

or Diatomaceous Earth

Both only kill slugs, and are biodegradable, and non toxic.

Coffee grounds, apparently. They have a little basket of packs of them for free in some Starbucks. The caffeine gives the slugs heart attacks.

Also my mum used to use crushed up eggshells in place of the fine gravel.

I am going to try nemaslug this year as my friend used it last year with great success. I have also been told putting out half grapefruit skins is useful as they will crawl under them and you can go out in the morning and dispose of the little horrors.

Ah yes. Crushed egg shells. They work best if you dry them in the oven.
