Dry or wet shade. How shady.
If dry could go with Pachysandra terminalis; some euphorbias; wet shade - ferns, hostas.

Epimediums are looking nice at the moment.

Clematis armandii is pretty happy in shade, so long as it's not too dry.

Following on from my thread about Hellebores I'd suggest them, plus foxgloves, also honeysuckle, skimmia, sarcococca, Hydrangea Annabelle, pulmonaria, anemone, lots of gernaniums esp phaeum, sylvaticum...

Have a look here for ideas

I was given some pulmonaria last year, they were tiny and bedraggled, this year they're blossoming beautifully pink and blue in the shade.

Also lesser periwinkle (good ground cover) and have successfully grown astilbes in the shade (go to Morrisons, they're 2 for £3.00 at the moment) although they do get a tiny bit of morning sun.

Was about to wade in with a periwinkle but Skink beat me. if you get a variegated one it brightens the area nicely,

I have some pretty periwinkle growing in deep shade but OMG it is really invasive.

LittlePushka · 16/04/2010 15:46

It is, but it is quite easy to pull out/trim back though and it looks really nice popping up out of the shade

debaronz · 17/04/2010 00:28

Primulas (but watch out for slugs)
