Potting shed question...

Pannacotta · 30/03/2010 16:53

We have just had a big shed put up and I'm hoping to use it partly as a potting shed, sewing seeds and taking cuttings etc. The chap who made it offered to install a long potting bench/worktop but I'm unsure how deep this should be.

Any suggestions as to what is a useful/practical depth?

Am a potting shed virgin so any advice most welcome

It's impossible to make them too big, in my opinion. If you can see / reach to the back, it's good!

I'll go out and measure mine for you later - I would estimate that it is about 50cm deep.
I love my potting shed, even on rainy days I can potter work outside. On the opposite wall I also have a high shelf where I can store loads of stuff and then I have lots of hooks for my tools.

Thanks both of you, am thinking I may get him to put in 60cm like a kitchen worktop and along one wall of the shed, so loads of space...

Also think carefully about the height of the thing. You don't want to be stooping for hours as you transplant seedlings, as that way backache lies.

We have one that is about 50 cm deep but it is still too narrow.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 30/03/2010 22:28

I've measured mine and it is 60cm deep.
When ours was being built I went in so they could position the shelves exactly. I am quite short and having it at the correct position has been brilliant - if I had had the shelf placed at the same height as the display model I would have had to stand on a small box to be comfortable.

Aha! I recall from another thread that AJumpedUpPantryBoy has an enviable greenhouse and shed.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 30/03/2010 23:11

I love my potting shed and greenhouse.
It's a shame the garden is a disgrace at the moment - I forsee a busy summer as I try and sort it out.

TrowelAndError · 30/03/2010 23:19

Don't be . It's good to know that other people are living the horticultural dream. I am currently neglecting all other tasks as I attempt to sort out the garden.

You could try measuring it out in seed trays? What you don't want to end up with is a situation where you can't quite fit on two rows of seed trays securely, I think. But 60cm should be fine for that.

TrowelAndError - I love your name!
It sums up my gardening ethos.

Thank you, PantryBoy. I thought I had been so witty and original. Then remembered that it was the title of one of Mr Titchmarsh's novels.

Pannacotta · 31/03/2010 19:37

Thanks all, GrendelsMum will check before I get the worktop made.
Btw I emailed you today but forgot to mention my MN username so hope it made sense!
