Please help my ex neighbour (who has done quite bit of garden tidying for me in the past) is coming round later to trim a huge shrub in my front garden. I would say it is about 8 feet high. I have always been really pleased with his work before and he is a nice lad (not being patronising, I mean he is polite and hardworking) . My garden is a bit of a nightmare and working on it funded his attendance at various festivals in the past. I used to pay a bit over the odds (I like in Yorkshire) £8-10 per hour because he was honest and hard working but he isn't a qualified gardener and he made some small mistakes. I don't want to underpay him now but I am on a much tighter budget. when he did the work before XH used to foot the bill because he was too lazy busy to do the jobs himself. I love gardening but we don't have heavy duty loppers for large shrubs, plus I have 2 little kids to look after.

What do you think would be a fair price? Money is very tight. I have to get the job done as it is blocking light to the lounge which means leaving the lights on when they should be off.

Any ideas (and apologies for the waffly nature of this post)

Shameless bump

Took him about 90 minutes. Did a nice job of sweeping up after but I will dispose of the branches (lots)

£15 or £20??

I would give him £15, think that is plenty. Do you not think it would be better to agree a price prior to work in future and this would stop the 'what should i pay him' dilema?

I am hardly summoning up workers to slave for me on a regular basis. Twas a one-off job. Glad you agreed with me, but seriously, lighten up a bit, eh?

Minimum wage is £7 an hour (90 mins = £10), but you dont want to pay minimum in case he thinks your a skinflint, so £10 is good, 90 mins = £15.

Seems fair to me.

Mspontipine · 22/03/2010 12:41

Minimum wage is £5.80 :-)

I am a qualified gardener and charge £10 an hour (although more for heavier / more skilled work)
I would be quite happy with £15 if I was him!!

I pay my gardener £10 an hour.
But I would always agree a rate with anyone helping in the garden before work started...
