a neighbour a few doors down from us keeps pigeons. They come and feed from our bird feeder (meant for small birds) even though we took the bottom tray off they still are managing to claw their way onto the feeder and hog all the birdseed. Not only that where the seed falls out is near our veg patch and the pesky pigeons are trampling any attempts to grow stuff. Not only that.... this is the worst - they are pooing all over our conservatory roof and decking. What can we do?
Have tried blasting them from the bathroom window with one of those powerful water pistol. They are the bain of my life!

Sorry, that probably sounded unhelpful. I'm not sure what you can do ... any point in asking your neighbour for suggestions, maybe even seeing if there is anything he/she can do to help? Seems unfair you should be plagued by birds (or any creatures) that a neighbour "keeps". I'd have thought they would have a responsibility to ensure their birds don't hassle people.

You'd get more replies though, if you called the thread "AIBU to blast pigeons with a powerful water pistol?"

think I need an even more powerful water pistol. Am liking the air pistol suggestion

A cat is what you need. Of course you can't be responsible for the cat's "natural" killing behaviour like the neighbours aren't responsible for their pigeons' behaviour. Though of course the other birds would be affected too. Hmm. What about a bird table that's inaccessible to big birds? With a roof on? We used to be pestered half to death by wood pigeons. We took down the tree they roosted in and they've not been seen since. Amusing for a while to watch them swoop in and screech to a halt when they noticed their resting place had gone.

If they are a serious nuisance your local council could do something. There is a nuisance act (1991). Pigeons carry all sorts of diseases. Try the environmental health department.

To be honest, this is why we stopped having a bird feeder - not a neighbour's pigeons, but just pigeons in general were wrecking it and I was sick of all the pigeon shit.

Once the bird feeder was gone, though, they went pretty quickly.

Stop feeding thme for a start...and get a scarecrow.

We stopped feeding the birds because the food attracted mice and probably rats. (Never saw rats but they are bound to be there as we live so near to open woods and heath) Used to love feeding the birds and took a lot of trouble over it but it's a bit much when mice are walking over your feet when you're in the garden.
