My DH has fried my seeds...and how easy is it to grow a mango?

I have just gone into my garden and realised that DH had put the lid on a propagator that he had put in the garden containing some seeds. These were unknown seeds we found in the cupboard under the stairs, I lovingly soaked them for days and put them in the propagator thingy and watered them. Them sprouted! They were still fairly unidentifiable and he felt they had been overwatered and put them outside. They are now a slightly brown crispy colour - are they beyond hope?

And also am attempting to grow an avocado stone, which he is NOT going to touch, and wondered if a mango would be easy? Anyone have experience?

I have an avocado tree - grown from a stone. It is enormous!

As far as I know 1 in 5 avocado stones will sprout. I did mine in a glass, with 3 matchsticks or cocktail sticks stuck in the sides of the stone, and immersed in water half the way up.

If you cut a little cross in the bottom of the stone (the pointed end is the top) it may help things along. I didn't put it in a pot until it had a lot of roots.

Keep it well watered, twice a week perhaps. Nice big pot too, give it room to grow.

My last avocado died from being put next to a radiator though - keep it in the coolest room away from radiators.

The very first avocado stone I tried this with, worked. That is until my parents labrador puppy decided to eat.

Currently have two small orange trees, grown from pips on kitchen window sill.

Going to buy and avocado later on today and will try again!

Wow, thanks for replying! I am not sure if mine is going to grow, it seems to not be doing very much. Am going to give it another month, or until we move, whichever comes first.....

Haven't thought of orange trees, were they easy? I am new to the "eat fruit and use the seeds" school, so am trying a few different things.

Anyone tried a mango? I would like to, but not sure how to go about it. Could Google it, but would rather hear a MN opinion

I haven't tried, but interweb recommends scraping all the slimy stuff of and then rubbing it lightly with sandpaper, and then you soak it for two weeks, in a bowl of water covered by a clear plastic bag, or until roots start to grow.
