Late/second crop potatoes

Has anyone had success with doing late potatoes for October-Christmas time? I saw it mentioned in an article about growing your own, but no further information.

I've got some potatoes growing in one of those potato bags (i.e. a vastly overpriced sack), and I'd like to do a second crop in another bag, but I'm a bit scared that it's all going to go wrong - this is our first year growing a sensible crop of vegetables, and I'm on a very steep learning curve!

You've just reminded me that I have some second earlies in a cupboard somewhere!

I also have some earlies growing in bags at the moment. Looking forward to eating them in June or July.

I'm a first time grower too!

I'm still reeling with shock that everything isn't dying at my touch TBH!

Hmm... found some second croppers online, wonder if I should risk ordering them, they deliver in July.

I don't know about late potatoes as I'm growing my first lot this year too. However, having used my (vastly overpriced) potato bag for the ones that I bought, my MIL gave me some more which I've put in an old compost bag turned inside out. So, no potato tips but a possible money saving one!

I am incredibly impressed with this (ridiculously simple) money saving tip! I don't really want to buy more bags, as we're hoping to be moving to somewhere with space for proper beds next year, so using compost bags does seem to be a slightly more sensible idea...

The compost bags are ideal for potatoes - as you have them rolled down. Then roll them up as you earth up the plants.

I had late potatoes last year. Couldn't make them last til xmas though.
I think that must be alot to do with proper storing. Hessian sacks in a cool, dark.
But we were eating them well into autumn (oct / nov)

Someone told me that when these potatoes we've got growing now are ready, you should be able to keep back a few tubers. Chit them and plant for late/maincrop.

One thing I would say is that apparently seconds and maincrops don't do so well in bags as first earlies - I think it's mainly because they have a much longer growing season so need more in the way of nutrients to keep them going. Also, bear in mind that it's quite late to be planting maincrops now - though probably (just) not too late. Ideally they should go in 2nd half of April, very early May.
