but what can I actually do with swiss chard? It tastes rubbery, any nice recipes? also, are radishes good for you in any way

Swiss chard is nice stir fried,or in salad when it is very small. As for radishes, well they count towards your 5 a day,but I don't grow them as no one in our house eats them but me.

Same here - I keep eating them and am up to about 20 day with interesting results - surely they must be giving me something unspecified but superfoodish?

Erm .. . where to start?

Things we do with swiss chard

  • a 'spinach' curry - fry onions til golden brown, add a couple of slices of fresh ginger & a crushed clove of garlic, then a tsp mustard seeds, fry a minute more, then add a heaped tsp garam masala & 1 of ground cumin & a bit of salt. Wash swiss chard well & then chop or tear it into pieces, put into the frying pan, stir around til it wilts, add a bit of water if it looks too dry, stick a lid on & cook 15 mins or so.

In pasta - fry onion in olive oil, add garlic, some chopped sundried tomatoes & a big handful of washed shredded chard, cook until chard is soft & wilted, mix in with pasta & grate cheese over it

Or as above but minus the tomatoes & keep it quite dry, mix into a white sauce

Or cook a big pot of brown lentils with some bouillon powder in the water then add a fried onion and loads of washed shredded chard & cook til chard is soft.

Or any cooked recipes that use spinach but cook for a bit longer than you would expect.

that sounds yummy, takver, and is it good for us?

I guess so - I think if you lived on it and nothing else then maybe there might be too much oxalic acid to be ideal (but then not so much as true spinach, rhubarb or sorrel). We eat a lot of it and we're all fairly healthy
